In a recent interview, Sony's Don Eklund, executive vice president of advanced technologies, had this to say about the companies they'd like to be partnering with for Blu-ray.
We would love to have Toshiba and Microsoft on board.
It's corporate BS like this that makes my day—the equivalent of Marvel trading the Spiderman IP for some free Wonder Woman comics. My other favorite quote?
Toshiba can't keep dropping prices much more...It maybe a strategy for fighting a format war, but for us it has to be profitable.
Profit? Sony? Blu-ray?
Having attended the most recent presentation from both the HD DVD an Blu-ray camps in Berlin, I walked away realizing just how poorly HD DVD is performing, as well as just how integral the PS3 has been to the limited success of Blu-ray.

isnt the PS3 solely being the only console with blu-ray one of it sell points? so why would they "invite" microsoft.
I think a Sony guy just answered a question taking a little jab at MS. When it comes down to it all these companies are about making money, and that's all they really care about. Does any of the companies really care about giving the consumer the better technology...no, they just want your cash.
To be honest -
I dont care about this blue ray/Hd-dvd stuff
A lot of my films/TV/Anime are older titles (most are a bit long thow)
I dont give a toss how much a disc holds I only care whats on it (remember the earlydays of CD with loads of FMV)
I still have games on floppy that are better than some of the games that come out on DVD
Honestly, Blu-ray/HD-DVD will never take off like DVD. DVD was a large upgrade, (except for me, I still think VHS is sufficient, baring HDTV). Still the only benefit of BR and HDDVD is HD, and when DVD came out, anyone with a TV could use a DVD player, and get the benefits of it (clearer picture). The point of HD digital video makes this moot except for HDTVs.
i like both HD-DVD and blu-ray because u need both for the ultimate experience in HD movies lol i dont even have an HDTV

Eh, I don't really care about Blu-ray, DVD's are fine by my standards.
Dont forget the things that made DVD popaler
1. Porn - Dont deniy that cheap porn sells
2. Copys - Very easy to copy
They probably want Microsoft and Toshiba, because without those two companies, HD-DVD is pretty much dead, and isn't that what Sony wants? One less thing to worry about for them
dosent porn come on HD-DVD and not blu-ray lol i think we got our winner their

Bull.
Who do you know that buys porn on a Disc/Tape anymore? Porn's all the internet now, even purchased porn. And porn comes on Blu-ray, Sony just refuses to produce mastered discs for porn industries. (Other studios can still produce them).
@Wenis
Microsoft could eventually drop HD-DVD, if Toshiba lets it go, it's game over. It's Toshiba's format, and they have a huge market to loose. (Especially, when DVD fades, that's loads of revenue gone).
Just a note... for the people that are actually willing to *pay* for pornography, moving up to 1080p will probably be enough to make them buy it instead. But yes, porn is not bought like it used to be.
I will also agree, DVD to HDDVD/Blu Ray is not the same jump from VHS to DVD. Not only did you get a better picture without a TV upgrade, but you had smaller storage space, more reliability (assuming you didn't scratch it up), AND YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO REWIND IT, and could skip to any part of the movie instantly. It hit as we were completely obsessed about optical media, and since CD's were fairing so well against cassettes, DVDs were the logical choice for movies.
They are pushing HD very much nowadays, and without a doubt, it will become standard. Yes, right now Blu Ray has a bigger following because of the PS3 thing, but that was a one time boost and in terms of market saturation, they only gained at advantage, they didn't become the standard just yet. Plenty of things could still swing things in HD DVD's favor (backwards compatibility, cheaper hardware, etc). Yes, Toshiba has been aggressively cutting prices, and if they keep on, they could get the advantage. So far, the vast majority of buyers into either format has been early adopters, so if HD DVD players hit a price point that is attractive to mass market consumers ($199 this holiday season, anyone?), you could see a flurry of sales that could completely wipe away the advantage the PS3 bought Sony. Even if the PS3 did sale (as a player) relatively well so far, it's still limited in market scope (customer has to be willing and able to purchase a $500 accessory that plays video games and movies, basically). A $200 HD DVD player would very likely have a larger market (customers willing to pay $200 for an accessory that plays movies only). It becomes an even bigger deal when that player hits the $100 and under price point, and if Sony hasn't brought prices of their standalones down by then, they are in for some real trouble.
1080porn
There are still people that buy the stuff.
Mainly the ones that arnt to online smart
Yeah I have a feeling that this holiday season could determine the next gen format, and if sony doesn't do something to counter $199 pricepoint for hd-dvd standalones then its game over, i really hope sony does something to stay in the game cause i would rather see blu-ray win out.
Well, HD-DVD standalone players outsell blu-ray stand alones 3 to 1. As for pr0n in 1080p, sometimes there's a little TOO much High Def.
you can never have enough high def

Bull.

I agree the internet makes it easier for people, but seriously, it's safe to assume the porn DVD industry is thriving. Softcore crap like Girls Gone Wild made some chump a multi-millionaire. Just because you go online doesn't mean others do too. Just loook at all the roadside sex shops still in business. Plus there is a porn store out in the middle of nowhere (nearest big city is an hour away, nearest small town about 15-20) just off an interstate that has been in business for years... I'm of the firm belief that truckers keep that place open.
Theres about three on the same street in my little town (Manchester)
But its not like I go around looking for them
But dont forget the next part in console/format sales
Copys
You cant deny that the PSX sold mainly due to copys (remeber I worked in a inde store allmost every person that got one said that they where going to get it chipped
Same gose with DVD players
The main resion they took off was the price and that films where easy to copy on dvd
So the first one that gets to under £100
And has easy to make copys
Will win
The avridge Joe on the street thinks that 1080p is £18.80p
They probably dont even know what a HMDI slot is
Bull.

Ahem, I don't watch pornography, I find it to be moraly disgusting myself. Whatever happened to sex being a sacred thing between a man and a woman in love? Still, 1080p is a little too much HD, I see it in certain situations on TV, where even a face close up is too much.
I love HD.
The higher the res the better.
I have got to the point that watching regular SDTV makes my eyes uncomfortable..
