Rumor: New 40GB PS3 at $399.99 for the holidays
Ars Technica has their very own mole, who they say is very good at what he does. Looks like he dug up some interesting stuff on Sony's plan for the holiday season. The rumor is as follows: the 80GB PS3 falls to $499.99, and a brand new 40GB PS3 is offered at $399.99.
Analysts have predicted the 80GB price drop before. As for this 40GB model, we've had a few tip offs that it might be in the works. In addition, the mole adds that Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray may be packed in with one or both of the bundles, and the PS2 drops to $99.99. Of course, these are merely rumors, so don't hold your breath while waiting for lower priced PS3s. We expect to find out more at Tokyo Game Show.

Although for how low the price seems to be, I bet it will be like the 80gb and have no backwards compatability
Backwards compatibility has never been a selling point for me, and a 40GB PS3 for $400 might just be low enough for me to consider it. At least Sony is doing something about their terrible sales, even if it is kinda making them look silly (how many SKUs have they released and discontinued so far?)
Thats where i'm different. I love to have backwards compatibility, and that is something sony has had all the way up to now with this ps3. Also it may still be a little to high for me to buy yet. So far its looking like i may be getting a 360 over a ps3. :/
i wouldnt have bought my PS3 if there wasnt backwards compatibility it gives the console more value plus i play PS2 games more than PS3 games

That is true also, there really isn't any games i would like to play for the ps3 as of right now though unfortunately.
And about this mole guy/gal..........i like them, gets us good info, hope they don't get caught and fired

I say that if you love backwards compatability so much, just get the 399 PS3, and get a used PS2 for 50 bucks, you would end up saving 50 bucks in the end most likely (an EE chip would probably increase the price by $100 that is)
lol i know, i have a ps2 hooked up right now but its the whole fact that i like my entertainment area to look neat and clean and not cluttered, but if it had to be worked that way then so be it.
SONY! STICK TO ONE VERSION OF THE CONSOLE!
Whatever one has backwards compatability, i'm getting, because I want TS1! (For collection perposes.) But I still want backwards compatability, if none of them have it, that sucks!
I'm not so sure why this news is really surprising. The PS3 is set up so that anyone who buys one, can easily swap out the hard drive and add almost any size they wanted. If it's this easy for us, then it's a no brainer for the company to sell systems with different sized hard drives for different prices. I still think you should find the cheapest one you can, then spend $60 and add your own 120gig hard drive.
^^^^
then thats all the more reason for them to sell ONE friggin version plus various sized harddrives for upgrades
nah unlike MS they don't charge you a ton of cash for propriety hard drive. I'd rather have 10 sku's and be able to add my own cheap hd if I choose.
sony is cheao and needs to learn from the pros

Xbox 360 HD prices:

Seagate compatible PS3 hard drive:

That's a huge difference in price...
360 hard drive prices from Amazon.com
Seagate compatible PS3 hard drive price from newegg.com
so if you get the elite its already equiped thats the 360 i plan on getting
Your right halojames, can't argue with logic like that, but for those who don't have the elite, they probably wish they didn't have to spend $90 for a 20gb hd and $180 for a 120gb hd.
