Wii owners in the UK will have a nice surprise waiting for them in the Wii Shop Channel. Nintendo have released two limited edition games on the Virtual Console. Mario's Super Picross and the true sequel to Super Mario Bros. (known as The Lost Levels) have seen the light of day in the UK. The bad news is that SMB2 will only be available until September 30th.

Mario's Super Picross is a Super NES spin-off of a popular Japanese puzzle game where using strategy to clear "blocks" is essential towards the final goal of making a completed picture. The original game, Mario Picross for the Nintendo Entertainment System was a major failure in the North American market, and so it was decided that the sequel would not launch outside of Japan.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a game which surely every true Nintendo "nut" will want to add to their collection. It was originally released on the short-lived Famicom Disk System, once again, only in Japan. Owners of Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES will remember a remade version of this game under the title "Super Mario Bros. 2: For Super Players", with upgraded graphics and color effects. The game was also released on the Game Boy Color game Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, under the same name as above (albeit without the "2")

Both games come with a small sun logo which according to a Nintendo of Europe newsletter is in commemoration of the Hanabi Festival, a celebration of Mario's birthday. Perhaps Elton John will write a song for it?

Some consumers may be aggravated by the arrogant pricing of the games. While it is understandable that they are Limited Edition games, both cost 100 Wii Points more than normal. Mario's Super Picross costing 900 Points, and The Lost Levels setting you back a nifty 600. A bit much for a short game; and as an owner of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, believe me when I tell you that The Lost Levels is very short, albeit extremely challenging.

The end of the NoE newsletter Nintendo it mentions that there are four more games will soon follow. Sin And Punishment for the Nintendo 64, Ninja Gaiden (US NES version), Gradius III (US SNES version), and Ninja JaJaMaru-kun on NES being those four games.

I personally have mixed feelings towards Nintendo's decisions here. On one hand they are giving British and Irish gamers the chance to experience games they never got a chance to play before; something that has been asked for constantly among disgruntled Euro-gamers. Yet, I feel this is another form of friendly marketing from the company. Of course, as an Irishman myself, I would like to see more of this in the future but would prefer if they weren't overpriced like they are. Even if it is just a €1 or 75p difference.

Australia also has this. But I'm not buying them.

I remember Lost Worlds on the SNES remake of Super Mario Allstars (or whatever it was called) and that would be a welcomed addition to the US VC. I'm not sure why they don't just open the VC to everyone and just let people choose.
