Full Version: What can the PS3 do?

So what can it actually do?

I know it can...
play movies and music, basically the norm. But is there any other cool little things it can do? Can you download games? I'm not talking about game demos, I mean full games made for download.

Does it come with component cables?

how long is the warranty?

Do the controllers have a rechargable lithium battery?

Do they overheat easily?

Did Sony really take out the Emotion engine, will it still play every PS1 and PS2 game?

Is there a lot of downloadable content that can rival the 360?

is there anything else I should know?

Please, I don't want to hear "just get a Xbox 360" because I like RPGs and not shooters. I'm basically buying a PS3 in two days and I'm really stuck up about spending 400-600 dollars on a console. So if I don't even like the dashboard, it's going straight back to the store.

Thanks!

if by games you mean arcade games, then yeah, sony already provides downloadable games. they also encourage developers to put larger more full-blown titles on there as well like warhawk.

Does it come with component cables?

nope. just some crappy composites. i bought my hdmi cables from firefold.com. they also sell a bunch of other stuff like components and optical audio cables too. the cable i got was of good quality. not flimsy at all and a pretty good price.

how long is the warranty?

i think it's 1 year.

Do the controllers have a rechargable lithium battery?

the batteries are rechargeable. if the battery happens to die, i heard sony will replace them for free.

Do they overheat easily?

nah, thyere well made. they do push out a lot of heat from the vents though, so just make sure that you give it enough ventilation as per the manual.

if you can find a 20 or 60GB system, those will still have the EE. the newer ones from here on out, like the 80GB, will use software emulation. i think sony's site has a list already of their backward compatible games along with a brief description of any issues found with either the EE chip or software emu.

Is there a lot of downloadable content that can rival the 360?

nope. on the 360, there are tons of demos, game videos, movies, tv shows, and arcade titles. theyve recently added a bunch of anime. sony seems to want to put out everything on thursdays whereas the 360 only uses wednesdays for arcade games; all other media(like movies and demos) gets released whenever they want.

is there anything else I should know?

when you plan on getting online, use any USB keyboard to input your info. since i was new at the process, i had to re-enter my info so many eff'in times because it wouldnt save any of it unless it worked... or because i'd press the wrong button.

i'd also suggest looking through the PS3 section of a few gaming sites to see what the console has to offer. you could also check out their official messageboards: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation for more specific info.

my comments are in marroon.
why anyone would PM this info is beyond me. this is stuff anybody who's looking to get a PS3 would probably ask again in the future. hope this helps you and others out.

well I for one would purchase a PS3 over a 360 simply because of the potential. I can see it in a few years when the PS3 has the best graphics, best downloadable content and better games than anything the 360 can bring to the table. All that supposed 'extra' stuff put into the PS3 like Blu-Ray and that Cell Processor are going to save its @$$ in about a year and a half...
