The Nintendo DS has become something of a status symbol, almost a fashion symbol, for the consumers of Japan.

As we all know, these factors combined with the console's great array of games have helped shape the machine's phenomenal success in its homeland. Though it has long been apparent that the DS has secured the top spot, what wasn?t apparent was the fact that the console wasn?t only the number one piece of game hardware for the first half of 2006. It was also the second best selling piece of hardware as well.

These statistics come courtesy of Enterbrain, who is the wacky publisher behind the Japanese weekly gaming bible Famitsu. In the company?s findings, which were covered from 26/12/05 to 25/6/06, they showed that the DS Lite officially came out on top as the best selling hardware sales. And believe it or not, the original DS came out second, leaving the poor PSP as the contender for the unlucky third place.

In total, Nintendo?s both portable gaming devices both are thought to have racked up 3.9 million units altogether. In comparison, Sony?s handheld rival PSP has only managed to achieve sales of 1 million. This certainly left the machine choking on the dust it?s been gathering on all those Japanese store shelves. Nintendo, on the other hand, is most likely cracking open the champagne bottles in celebration.

im not that surprised at these statistics this is a vary new and inivative system that will keep on selling
yea i heard about this but i was surprised most ppl i know either have a psp or said it was better then the ds
^ yea me too but good find!
DS is the new Gameboy, and Gameboy is the best selling video game system line ever. So I hope no one will be surprised when the DS outsells it's predecessor.
I think the suprise comes from the stiff competition from Sony this time around, and how well Nintendo fared against it.

Even though we see the DS as a gameboy, Nintendo has always stressed that the DS is not a gameboy and should not be compared, which is why they continue to promote the GBA SP and Micro, and were planning on creating a more powerful gameboy that would be a more direct competitor to the PSP. However, with the success of the DS and DS Lite, I'm not sure if Nintendo is still working on the Gameboy line or if they plan to build on the success of the DS.
DS 2 ideas - The next DS will or should have all of the following:
A trackball or analog control for movement, possibly swappable for those lefties.
Built in rumble pak
No GBA compatibility - GBA games are done...face it...
More games that use the rumble, voice...
Built in Browser
DS Lite design - none of this gray Phat DS
Internal memory for downloading and keeping a library of Wii-DS2 downloads like demos, videos, full games that you buy through the WiiConnect24, etc.
Touch Screen is the new must have or at least dual screens
compatibility with exsisting DS games
better porting capabilities of NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube games

anything else...?

oh yeah, a $149 or less price tag and it shouldnt come out for at least three years.
or if it does have GBA backwards capabilities it should also do GBC

No, it isn't.
SP is/was the new GameBoy, we're still waiting for the NEW GameBoy. :3

well the Micro was after GBASP

but niether have there own range of games so are they really new portable consoles i dont think so but thats my opinion.
Last I heard Nintendo was ending the Gameboy line? Or was I just crazy when I heard that. I believe the DS is the Gameboy replacement... right?

And I'm not really surprised its outselling the PSP.
im pretty sure that the game boy micro is out now...

whether that will be the last gameboy i dont know but nintendo will release more ds's because of its popularity
Nintendo was going to make the DS and a new GameBoy, but they're making a crap-load of money, so they're not anymore. I wish the PSP was doing better. It has superior games IMO.

They are still making a new GameBoy. I'm sure it's gonna own the DS too.

Game Informer(Game magazine) has said they aren't. But GI is wrong sometimes.
