I will go around like this:
1. Check out all the features and menu's
2.Train with each character
3.See how online works
4. Go to Subspace Army or something and unlock characters.
5. Find a Main to play online.
1 - Menus
2 - Subspace Emissary/Unlock Characters
3 - Train with characters.
4 - Online/Offline matches.
Very efficient.
First check out the features, get a little practice in, unlock some characters in single player mode, get some more practice in, then kick some arse online.
I'll mess around with the menus a bit, unlock some characters...
Then I'll invite my friends over. SMASH PARTY FTW! >:3
Once they're gone, I'll play online. ^_^
Spend Monday Through Friday training and unlocking characters...
invite friends over on Saturday and Sunday to play nonstop (off and online)
do it all again next week!
open the game. watch the beginning video. cry cuz it will be so beautiful.
start unlocking characters, probably looking online to find out how to unlock them (i wont want to waste time trying to find out how to unlock them)
start practicing while unlocking characters
probably beat the supspace mode a few times
then play a few online matches
(the next day, play a lot)
watch the intro, check out features/menus, play through all the single player stuff, unlock all the characters, then let the multiplayer madness begin!!!!!

- read every word in booklet (i also do that )
- look through the menus/character selection
- find control ooption i like most
- find main(s)
- 1P modes and unlock everything
- Online/Offline Matches
When I first get the game, I will set it aside and wait until the weekend to play it. Like i did with MP3 (which I have yet to play again since the weekend it launched). Homework and other things I have going on are just too much to be playing on school nights. When I do play I'll practice the with different control styles then unlock characters. And have some online/offline matches.

i'm actually going to try using the Wii Remote to play the game and see how it works...
I forgot about the manual! I my previous list is assuming post-disc-insertion... I always read every manual to every new game I get cover to cover (well, not anymore since nintendo started putting spanish and french instructions in them as well... just the english
) before playing!
Beat story mode asap, get all characters, explore game mechanics and see what adv. techs are still in the game. If there aren't many, focus on Melee and put Brawl back to secondary.

Booklet is a big "meh" for me. It might end up being leaked early.
I find reading the booklet comes in handy at least to figure out the basic controls. So i usually at least read that and the rest you can usually learn in game.
