Ok, so I finally picked up God of War. Put it in my ps2, and I get nothing. Check the disc, no issues, pop it back in... nothing. Flashes up "reading disc for ~1-2 secs and stops. Try out 5 other games (DMC, Guitar Hero, Madden, Tony Hawk, Kingdom Hearts), all work fine.
Take it back to the store thinking it's a defective disc and exchange iit. Bring home the new disc, once again, nothing. Why is it that a new disc won't play in a system that will play all other games I own (some of which are in terrible shape... came with it used). Funny thing is, it's a sony game. In checking online, I've found a select few others have had the same problem, but I have yet to find a solution outside of buying a new system. To top things off, Sony's customer service is garbage. They literally hung up on me saying they couldn't take my call, at 3:00 central time.
I hate Sony. Help if you can.
I'm sorry that I can't give you any advice on this. I have an original PS2 (launch day model) and bought GOW when it first came out and have had no issues with it.
This may sound rather dumb, but do you have your PS2 laying down or in a vertical position (I can't imagine you have it vertical, but thought I'd ask).
I'm not sure where you bought the game from, but I'd have them pop it in a PS2 there and see if it works. If it does then there's something wrong with your pesky PS2.
Sorry I can't be more help.
Yeah, I'm working on getting a second ps2 to test the game.
It's just odd that one ps2 would be able to play games like Devil May Cry or Guitar Hero and not God of War. Logically, I would expect if a ps2 is going on the blink, it would have trouble with most games, not just one that's more graphically intense (should have nothing to do with whether or not the game will load). To me it sounds like a compatibility issue... but then again, it loads absolutely nothing. If it were the more graphically intense portion causing the problem, then I should at least be able to see the loading screens.
Do you have a standard PS2 or a slim one?
Standard... (looking online I found some people with slims and some with standards having the same prob.) Puzzling.
I've read that the older PS2's sometimes have a hard time reading dual layer discs which GOW is...I still think there's something else going on though since my PS2 is an origianal and it worked just fine.
my cousins PS2 does that a lot now.
The old versions can't really play GoW that well.
To me it sounds like a firmware issue (or something that would have still been an issue even if the system were brand new), like the GoW disc is trying to do something the system can't. I finally got ahold of someone at sony and they're trying to blame it on hardware saying the ps2 is defective (funny how it plays everything else a-ok).
If it were the "enhanced graphics" that were the problem, then why wouldn't I at least be able to load the start-up screens??? It should be able to at least read the disc. Everything points to a faulty ps2 release that sony is trying to put their oversite on the customer and blaming it on age and mishandling.
Troubles alleviated. Tried the game out in another system, booted up just fine. Found a website to "fix" ps2 disc read errors. Took it apart, cleaned the lens using rubbing alcohol and a q-tip (a gamers best friend). Started right up, no issues since. Getting my GoW on.
Here's the website with instructions for certain older models.

The only thing I'd caution you on is make sure you don't pull out the wire that controls the power/eject buttons. Cleaning the lens was a piece of cake.
Now let me ***** about Sony:
Granted I'm not a fan of Sony, but I found this to be rather crappy of them. I called their customer service and talked it out with them. They wanted to charge me $45 plus shipping to "fix" the system. I asked them if it could be an issue with the lens and would cleaning it help. They said no, and strongly advised me from opening the housing as it would "void my warranty"... what warranty, the one that expired years ago??? From what I hear, this problem happens all the time to older ps2's, and it's a quick and easy fix. It took me a total of 2 minutes to fix. Sony is raping their customers yet again for something they screwed up (a poor system design that allows for easy build-up of dust and a laser that can easily be affected by dust and get mis-aligned over time with normal use). For the long time they spent at the top of the food chain, I really have little confindence in the sony brand for a lot of consumer electronics.
I'm spreading the word on this fix, because it saved me some cash and it was simple. I know 3 others who had similar issues to higher degrees, so hopefully I can fix their systems.
Good to know you fixed it.
My smackdown vs raw original used to work now doesn't, I believe it works on other systems, the game means nothing to me now but if I ever have a problem with a game I like Il try it.
It was puzzling but all its down to is the lens

Yeah, that website was a big help, but looking back at it it was really simple to do. I'm sure Microsoft and Nintendo would have done something similar in the same situation, but then again Xbox and GC systems aren't dropping like flies. I know 6 people that have had to get new playstation 2's due to it junking out on them (now I know 4 of those might have been easily fixed), yet I know no one that has replaced an xbox or GC. Just my experience.
The 360 and Wii are different stories though. lol

360 has been written in death note.
Wii remotes are ore durable then the console >.<
Only one of my friends has had a wii issue and he got it replaced and I know of two people that have had 360 issues and one of them had his replaced.
