Sony turns to Taiwanese co to make cheaper 40GB PS3

It looks as if those reports suggesting a new, entry-level 40GB PlayStation 3 might just be true.

An electronic manufacturing news source has revealed that Sony has turned to Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn to make the rumoured lower-specced version.

Although it appears the 80GB model will continue to be made by ASUSTeK, the manufacturer for the new rumoured 40GB model will be the same company that produces Sony's PS2s.

Previous industry speculation had stated that not only will the 80GB model get a price cut, to the current price for the 60GB model, but that an entirely new "beginner" version will be introduced.

It has been suggested that a few, more minor features, such as the console's USB ports or backwards compatibility might be lost in order to let Sony offer the model more cheaply.

The current rumoured price for the 40GB PS3 in the States is $399, which directly converted to sterling would be £200. It's unlikely the UK would see a model that cheap - but a £300 price point pitching it up against the Xbox 360 Elite is not out of the question.

Timescales touted for the launch of the new model are either this week at the Tokyo Game Show, or early next week in order to "spoil" the high profile Halo 3 launch for Microsoft's rival Xbox 360.

If these to pan out to be true, then its pretty much a sure bet I will be buying one. not that anyone cares

This is an interesting little piece of news. It will be interesting if it turns out to be true but i guess we'll have to wait and see. That and I really don't think it would "spoil" the halo 3 launch too much if it is true.
Well it would be better for Halo somewhat if the Sony doesn't announce it by tomorrow. I'm sure Microsoft wants everyone to be talking about Halo 3, but if Sony did announce it tomorrow then alot of people woudl be talking about that as well. though I doubt it would actually hurt game sales
Sony, shut up and stick to one version of the console!
I said it before that personally a $400 (or less) model would convince me to buy a PS3 sooner rather than later. As soon as it gets some really good games that aren't on the 360.
40GB PS3 listed on FCC website

The rumors of Sony's mythical 40GB PS3 have been swirling around almost as fast as Lyndsay Lohan ruining her career, but until now, we haven't had any hard proof of the former. A recent Sony FCC filing suggests a new PS3 model, designated CECHG01, is coming, despite the company's recent denials.

Unlike what previous stories suggested, it looks like Wi-Fi and USB ports will remain in this new model, but there wasn't any information on the size of its hard drive, which I'm sure the ladies are just dying to know.

If Sony can keep everything inside the PS3 that makes it so great, but drop the hard drive down a bit and hit the more consumer-friendly price tag of $399, it could find that audience who has been reluctant to join the Sony Army.

funny how taking off 20gb can make a $100 price drop Big Grin
Your right halojames, it is odd, but just look at the price of the Xbox's hard drives if you buy them separate....
both companies are overpricing their harddrives, but in different ways
still if you have a 360 theres no real reason to buy a PS3. looks like i learned my lesson when i bought one game by game keeps getting delayed on the system
Just so you know last console war, the gamecube and dreamcast were pretty much raping the ps2 then about 2-3 years into it the ps2 took off and went to sell 100 million consoles (with the gamecube selling only 20m and the DC gettin KO'd). the main reason it took that long was because the ps2 was originally like 400 bucks, so don't be suprised that with a few price drops down the road the ps3 will take off just like the ps2 did. not to mention with the technology in the PS3, it has the most room to grow out of any console

Huh? Ok you just totally made that up. The Dreamcast and GameCube were never even remotely close to the PS2 in sales:

PlayStation 2 - 1.13 million (Japan only)
Dreamcast - 290,000

Sept. 2000 - March 2001
PS2 - 8.07 million
Dreamcast - 2.33 million

March 2001 - Sept. 2001
PS2 - 8.96 million
Dreamcast - 590,000
GameCube - 510,000 (Japan only)

Sept. 2001 - March 2002
PS2 - 9.11 million
GameCube - 3.29 million
Xbox - 3.08 million
Dreamcast - 220,000

March 2002 - Sept 2002
PS2 - 12.88 million
GameCube - 2.89 million
Xbox - 2.75 million
Dreamcast - 90,000

Anyway, you pretty much know how things went from there.

eh my bad.  you can see though how much the PS2 sales grew progressively after price cuts came, so I was right on the main part. and the part on the dreamcast going bye bye Wooo
Well, I know that my 360's 20gb HDD only has about 8GB of spare room on it, less after downloading demos and videos.

A 40GB PS3 with Wi-Fi would be awesome (I don't want more cables running across my floor), and would seriously push me towards getting one.

If that's the case, then I'll be back to the age-old problem of waiting till a multi-platform game is reviewed for both systems to determine which is better (Assassin's Creed, for example).
