Full Version: Industry flamebait: the PS3 is a 3DO

According to GameDaily, an "anonymous respectable industry veteran" has been calling the PS3, the "PS3DO," drawing comparisons to the failed 32-bit system of yore. The system, which featured bleeding-edge technology for its time, failed due to its high market price, and lack of high-profile games. Thankfully, this industry flamebait has met appropriate response, being shot down by most.

David Cole of DFC Intelligence notes: "The PS3 has all kinds of software support, billions of dollars in backing, a well known brand name, they are able to do marketing and it sold more units in its first few days on the market than the 3DO did in the 3 years or so it was on the market. PS3DO sounds cute and catchy, but as an actual basis for comparison it is pretty useless."

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities also agrees: "It's a pretty stupid (and unfair) comparison," he said. "3DO was a new platform, no brand ID, not compatible with legacy software, and with no first or third party support. The PS3 has a great brand, a loyal customer base, is generally backward compatible, has a ton of third party support, and an ever-increasing number of good first party titles. I hope the industry veteran was kidding. If he was serious, he's a fool."

If you don't recall or if your too young, this is a 3DO or at least one of the versions...

XDXDXDXDXD....thats just plain dumb...i less than 3 Michael Pachter Smile
I remember the 3DO and there is little in comparison between that and the PS3. I know that 3DO actually let other manufacturers build the system under their own names...I remember a Panasonic and Goldstar version, but I'm pretty sure there was at least one other company that made them too.
i can see the correlation, guess we will all know in a couple of years
Talk about apples and oranges. The PlayStation 3 has already sold more than the 3DO did (3DO never even made it to 1.5 million units worldwide). The key here however is brand recognition. Sony sold over 220 million units over the last two generations of hardware. That's a lot of satisfied customers. More than likely a large number of those satisfied customers will come back when hardware prices drop (not to suggest that they will sell near that many again, but it will compete again at least) and some big titles are released.
It's no 3DO, but unless it does a 180, it's gonna flop hard. Support for it is lingering, and it's really getting abandoned. Wii throws in a curve, so many games have a Wii and 360 version, with that being too much work to worry about the PS3. As more time goes on, I find I'm more and more disappointed with my PS3. All the first name titles have failed, I'm seriously considering going back to 360.
Halo launch week was bad for sony.

I, alone, traded in about 10 PS3s for the 360 + halo + forza + extra controller bundle.

We now have a pile of pre-owned PS3s

Could you give me details on what business this is, and how much the PS3 trades for vs the bundle. I'm honestly considering getting a 360/gears/halo3 back. (I SO wish I wasn't saving for a down payment.)

PS3do... lol

i had a 3do and all it had were thouse crappy Digital Picture games... though the Horde was cool. i think the comparison is accurate right now with the PS3 and 3DO being similar with the only exception being the brand name. though i also think that sony can break the pricepoint curse if it can get the ball rolling on games that rule...

so far, the only one making me think about getting PS3 is MGS4
Comon guys, people have been making this comparison for a year now. I played the 3DO quite a bit when it was pretty new, but the lack of games moved us to other consoles. Considering the price increase from the Blu Ray addition make sales stagnant, the player is making up a large portion of the sales it is getting now (considering it is the cheapest Blu Ray player on the market)
Yeah the blu-ray is a big seller on the ps3's and I think once there are some decent games for the PS3 that it could take off. Though personally right now i would get a 360 :/
