Full Version: Everything We Actually Know About New PS3 SKU

Sony's recent FCC filing over the alleged 40GB PS3 has gotten us all focusing on the wrong issues. Why do we constantly look at the one feature of the PS3 that consumers can most easily change (the swappable hard drive) to define an SKU? And besides, the 40GB drive is the rumor aspect of the story anyway. PS3Forums is refocusing out attention to what we actually know about this new SKU (while I'm just bitching off topic about what actually matters).

It draws less current; Now only rated 3A down from the previous 3.2A

Bluetooth is the same version as before, however the Antenna gain is increased on Antenna1 from 0.21dBi (max) in the original 60Gb, up to 3.83dBi (max) in the new SKU. Antenna2 also sees an increase, from 4.13dBi (max) up to 4,92 dBi (max).

WLAN is still 802.11b/g, however there is a difference in Antenna gain too. ANT0 is now 0.69dBi from 0.10dBi previously, and ANT1 is now -0.26dBi from 0.91dBi.

The controller used in the test had the model number of the original launch Sixaxis, not the Dual Shock 3.

And as for the existence of a 40GB hard drive, just remember, if you actually use the PS3 as your future hi def media hub, 60 and 80GB versions aren't going to offer enough space, either.

This seems pretty good, since we've been hearing that this was going to be a drastically stripped down model. It has a HD, it has Wifi, and it still has bluetooth, so unless they take off some memory card readers or something, this system should be very good (maybe even a little better with the added specs and lower power consumption).
I also heard they were going to reduce the number of USB ports, of course thats just a rumor
I'm not exactly sure why people would need a ton of USB ports for anyhow. I mean I can understand 1 for the PS eye and an extra one, but when you get into having a baker's dozen (haha) that just seems kind of outrageous.
I know. if I had a ps3 all i would need is 1, and that would be for the controller.  dont even need one for a headset since its blue tooth

I guess there are alot of them since the PS3 is a 'computer' entertainment system
one of sony's selling point was being able to connect 7 controllers(or was it more?) to the PS3.

your right..its 7 (b'_')b

yup 7 controllers wirelessly with bluetooth, and that should be better with the better antenna setup.
I heard today on g4tv that this PS3 will only have 2 USB 2.0 ports.
why would you connect 7 when you can only connect 4?

Your from the United States James, didn't you get the memo? More is better. Even if you wouldn't use it.

I think the idea is this. The PS3 has the ability to simultaneously run 7 PS3 controller via bluetooth. That doesn't mean there will ever be a game to support that, but the PS3 can do it.

I didn't see the part about it not supporting PS2 backwards capability.  Not a huge deal to me, but this just might be enough to make me pick one up.  I have a 160 2.5 laying right here that I could swap out with the 40GB anyway (and will have a 120 when i find one cheap enough soon for my 360).
Yup, they're saying that the system will have no backwards compatibility, which for some people might just be a deal breaker, but who knows. I think enough PS2's were sold that if people really wanted to pop in an old game they'd just hook that up and wouldn't be too worried that the PS3 couldn't play those games or the PS1 games.
