It seems gamers aren't the only people excited about Sony's cheaper 40GB PlayStation 3 as UK retail store GAME has recently given its stamp of approval.

"We feel that this is a very positive move from Sony. The price reduction will make it easier for even more customers to enjoy the incredible gaming experience you get with a PS3," said GAME Commercial Director Tricia Brennan. "There are more games consoles available than ever before, and today's price cut means they all represent amazing value for money when you consider the incredible technology and sheer volume of entertainment that they offer."

It's great to see retailers rallying behind Sony, and we're sure the company welcomes the positive feedback as it tries to downplay the significance of the 40GB's slimmed down feature set.

i'll be excited about it if it ever finds its way to north America
This is good news for sony. Now they just need some more hit games and then maybe even I would buy a ps3 over a 360.
If Sony gets some nice games out by Christmas, combined with this, it could be a real winner. Even though the 360 has far better games, PS3 hardware at only $50 more than the Premium 360 ($50 less than the closer, but not equally powered elite (few need 120GB)), would really get many to go over.

Competition is always a good thing.
hahaha.

I still laugh inside every time someone trades in a PS3 with a copy of resistance for an elite with halo.

It's no longer the price, it's the games.

Where do you work that a PS3 with resistance gets you an elite with H3?

Rumor: 40GB PS3 to head to US November 2nd

Immediately after SCEE's bizarre announcement of the 40GB system in European territories, many are awaiting SCEA''s announcement of the same. The 40GB system will retail for significantly less than current PS3 models, most likely dropping down to the $399 price point. However, it will lose 2 USB ports, memory card readers, and will also lose any support for PS2 games.

well, they have to pay about £100 on top of the trade-in price for the PS3 and the game (and I'm from the UK and work in GAME), but seriously, we get like three or four trade-ins like that every couple of days

JEEZ! Isn't that, like, suicide?

That loss of backwards compatibility is the deal breaker with me...# of USB ports, who cares. But I want my GOW..... Never had a ps2... I'll probably end up getting a used one.

Nope I don't think it is, because I wouldn't be at all surprised if we don't see PS2 prices come down to around the price of a PS3 or 360 game this holiday season. So picking a PS2 to play old games (if for some reason you don't already have one) won't be a big deal.

Backwards compatibility with the 360 and PS3 have been sketchy to say the least with many issues, so I'm not sure why everyone wants to get all gooey over it, as if it was a God-sent and perfect or pretend it's more then what it really is.

wrdm8. the only reason i got my 60GB sku is because i didnt want to deal with software emulation(i also got it for under $400 new). it's terrible on the 360, and theres no way im going through that on the PS3.

the PS3's looking a lot less like the ultimate multimedia computer after each new sku. something that concerns me is how will sony replace or repair the consoles with the EE chips? with MS, they give you a refurbed one, and so far they've kept adding stuff to it. if i get a refurb from sony, will i get a gimped console?

I would guess that Sony will probably repair the system you send in. I mean that's like someone asking if they buy a new 360 with HDMI, is there a chance they might get a nonHDMI system back...I really doubt it, but that might be a good question to either email or call Sony about and get their official response.
sony just give up lol Big Grin

thanks for your great insight james, but if you have nothing to contribute to the topic, then don't post just to post.

I think this less expensive PS3 will be a hit, and saying that the PS3 is some how diminished because it's loosing 2 USB ports, memory card readers, and backward compat. is a bit much. If you wanna check out pictures do so on your computer, not your game system, and as for the USB...I don't see why you'd need all of those offered by the original PS3 anyhow.

D4rk works in GAME. "Tricia Brennan" is his codename. D'uh

i'm still confused on all this backwards compatability stuff. first they said they were taking out the EE chip, now I heard backwards compatabilty can be done with firmware updates, so whats the point of an EE chip? either way the 40gb is the version for me. my PS2 is still working fine so BC doesn't make me want a PS3 anymore than it would without BC, and I would only need 1 usb port anyways just for the controller, since it can use bluetooth headsets. but most importantly it is within my price range Eekyum

I was pysched when I first heard about this.. I may actually buy a PS3 sooner if this rumor is true. And for $400? That's a steal compared to the current models!

That's just it...sony is marketing the ps3 as a multimedia center....able to replace your computer and do everything on your giant TV screen, rather than a small monitor.

Okay I was originally going to get a PS3 for backwards compatibility and MGS (I don't have a PS2 atm)

Then they took out the EE chip which supposedly gave near-perfect backwards compatibility.

The software b/c was a bit rubbish but I could deal with it if it let me play a few key games.

Now their about to take it out completely from one of the skus?!

I see a trend here.
hmm, could be the reason why they are also dropping the price of the PS2 as well.
