The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has long been considered to be the
greatest video game ever created. It marked the transition of one of Nintendo's largest franchises into the third dimension and was nearly flawless. Well it may have just been dethroned by some fat Italian plumber who moonlights as an astronaut.
At the moment
Super Mario Galaxy holds a 97.8% average at Game Rankings.com over 30 reviews while
Ocarina of Time sits at 97.6% having been reviewed by 31 different sources. Of course the game is only one not so great review to bring it back down to Earth and settle in 2nd or 3rd place. If you were to ask me I would tell you that
Galaxy is in fact the better game, but I know of course some people will argue how revolutionary
Ocarina of Time was for its, er, time. Regardless of what Zelda may have done nearly 10 years ago, you can't escape the fact that
Super Mario Galaxy surpasses it.

Wow, topped OoT???
Goes to show how I shouldn't have put it back on the shelf after my mom said "put it on your Christmas wish-list" >_<
Great find though, hard to believe that something topped OoT. I wonder how they would stack it up to Super Metroid?
1. Super Metroid
2. Ocarina of Time
3. Final Fantasy VII
And that is how my own top 3 games of all time shall remain. But good to hear it averages out to beat Ocarina.
No, it's a great platforming game, and a lot of things are done perfectly, but OoT has the edge of being revolutionary. In its time OoT was nigh perfect, and in this day and age Galaxy is nigh perfect, but it doesn't do much that hasn't been done before, and just doesn't have that shock value of standardizing, and perfecting something that was brand new. We were thrown in the 3-D era by SM64 and OoT, and for being pioneers in a (semi) new dimension they started things off excellently. Galaxy on the other hand just takes everything we know and love, throws it in the game and does it masterfully.
If we were to say that Galaxy surpasses OoT and is therefore greater, we should also put Twilight Princess up there. Besides the difficulty it was a phenominal game and surpasses both OoT and SM64. [/2cents]
And saying that TP surpasses OOT and SM64 is a very sickening statement.
I'd name OoT the greater game just for the fact that it took a DECADE to 'surpass' it.
But I really don't care. It's all opinion anyway. For example; Other rating websites would, combined with the above score, would lower the "overall score", right?
Even if we were to take away the shock and "revolutionary" merits from OoT and SM64 this is the way I'd still rank it:
1. Galaxy
2. Ocarina of Time
3. Twilight Princess
4. SM64
If Twilight Princess' difficulty just wasn't set to "Kiddy" it would've been second.
It's not like you can somehow unplay any 3D Zelda games to get that same revolutionary feel now, which is why I personally don't like when people try using the "it was revolutionary back then" argument. A big reason why I was disappointed that Corruption was scored lower than the original Metroid Prime. It wasn't revolutionary in the 2D to 3D way, but it was the better game and scores didn't reflect that.
I don't care how revolutionary SM64 was on the N64, I got bored of it really quickly when I downloaded it. SMG fixes its problems by taking away the repetitiveness that was present in the 64 version. I've yet to finish SM64 and just don't feel compelled to. SMG on the other hand is the complete opposite.
This is a fruitless debate of opinions. You can't use Gamerankings as fact due to it being an average of a handful of reviewers.
Which is why I feel safe in saying my list will remain unchanged. And for the record, Metroid Prime 1 at best is only equaled by Corruption. Why? Metroid Prime 1 did everything first... Corruption would have been better if it took a few steps in a different direction and wasn't as stupidly easy.
And don't even start on Twilight Princess. The best Zelda's are OoT, ALttP and even WW (possibly sub it out for LoZ or MM) but no TP. TP is okay, but nothing amazing.
SMG on the other hand is the complete opposite.
Because it's a newer, cleaner, more polised SM64 with different level design and physics?
Really. Nintendo hasn't changed the plot much. It just only throws him in space.
That's pretty much it but the main thing is, it's better.
Like LMX said tho, it's a matter of opinion. Every person that winds up posting in this thread will either have a different list of their top games or different reasons for why they chose one over another.
Exactly, which is why Gamerankings is "meh"
I mean look, they have The Orange Box in there for two systems. That's just lame.
TP was amazing, but OoT > TP back then, and now!
if were talking about just those four games id put.
1 OoT
2 SMG
3 MP3 = TP
4 sm64
i havent even p[lay mp3 for more than an hour but from what i hear and from other metroid games ill be puting it just under SMG, if Chrono trigger was to be considered it would beat OoT IMHO on that list but this is just those 5 games so OoT wins. dont get me wrong TP was still awesome as hell but OoT is just better, same with SMG mostlikely. but it all boils down to a difference of oppinions who cares what gamerankings says is the greatest game ever. no one site has the power to declare anygame even if its a mario game the greatest game ever. because every one is different. and yes im not in OT this title caught my eye so i left my kingdom for a bit. the thruth is there are proabably millions of these so called "greatest games ever" because no one game can claim such a title, the fact of the matter is that no on game can claim such a title becuase its not a unanimous title if every single person in the world agreed unanimously on a greatest game ever then i would accept a game being publically called the greatest game ever but untill then i will have my own oppinions no matter what any site or person tries to say.
Hearing someone say Corruption = Twilight Princess is quite disappointing. Of course its because you haven't played it... if you had you'd see that it kicks that underachieving clone's ass.

i loved twilight princess like seriously loved it., and im pretty sure i will love MP3 u must have really either hated TP or really loved MP3 lol. but ya i havent played it much at all so dont take what i said to heart XD

the only reason why its so high up there is because its 5 games in on a even though all those games are really good a game that has 5 games should definately not be aloud to be on that list. thats like the equivalent of h4x'ing
To say I "hated" TP is a bit much. A more accurate way of describing my feelings is that it is a step backwards from the incredible leap forward Wind Waker took.
And yes, I loved MP3. 2nd best Metroid game to date.
I wouldn't have even called it step backwards because if I remember correctly, WW was also disappointingly easy. And as for Game Rankings, it's not like you're only getting one man's opinion. The average comes from the reviews done by many different people, from just as many different sources.

aww so i c so it disapointed you, i hate when that happens, but i havent played windwaker for me it was OoT, then years and years pass TP so i was thrilled for another zelda game.

30 people is hardly many, and still no matter what other people say even if that 30 was 5000000 it might make me go and buy the game but after i play it its up to me and me alone how good it is. so thats why no one video game can claim the title as "the best ever" because it would have to be unanimous.
the truth is the greatest game in the world is whatever the single person feels is the best. that is why one game will never best game ever. (lol its really hard to explaing what im trying to touch upon sory if what im saying is sounds really confusing or stupid lmao.)
Like I was saying to LMX, I wouldn't be able to pick one game as the best of all time. It's just not possible for me. One day I'll like this game, another I'll like a different one. I just have a list of games that I'd consider to be great, with a few of them being slightly better than others but with no clear #1 through 5.
Wind Waker took Zelda to a new place. And a new style. And I loved it. Twilight Princess stepped back into Ocarina's massive footprint and failed to come close in comparison.
As for top 5 lists.
#1: Super Metroid
#2: Ocarina of Time
#3: Final Fantasy VII
#4: Super Mario Bros. 3
#5: Super Smash Bros. Melee
haha i get what your saying cause OoT > TP thats for sure (and when i say that i ofcourse mean IMHO) so haha its just like halo.
halo 1 = omg wow!
halo 2 = ONLINE HALO OMFG
halo 3 = ... didnt i buy this game 2 years ago?
well maybe not. umm ill just be going back to ot now..... lol
