Full Version: Sony cuts PS3 dev kit price in half

In an attempt to further diversify the Playstation 3's library of games, Sony has announced a dramatic price cut for the console's software development kit. The Playstation 3 Reference Tool will now be made available to new developers for $10,250 USD, or €7,500 EUR. This is nearly half of what the SDK has previously cost developers.

Sony has also announced plans to further cut the cost of the development kit once more studios have adopted the format. On the surface, it's clear that Sony's struggling to earn new developers for their console, and hopes that incentives like a reduced entry fee for development will bring new blood to the system. On the other hand, decreased developer costs are good for everyone, so we'll eagerly wait to see where this takes the PS3 in the coming months.

I think this is great news. More smaller companies will have the ability to purchase and use these dev kits now that the price has been dropped so dramatically. This is a good move by Sony.
good news for ps3 owners. unlike nintendo, Sony learned quickly to change their ways. It took nintendo years to change, and they still refuse on some accounts.
Yeah nintendo is kinda stubborn. But i'm definately looking forward to see what the future will hold for PS3. I'm sure glad that Sony can learn from mistakes.
Is it just me or have Sony played the best game this generation so far?

First they launch a very powerful but expensive system, people complained and such but ever since Sony have been losing exclusives.

They taken this all in their stride and their initial plan to slowly lower costs and specs has been happening.

+ Kudos for Sony.

How is loosing exclusive playing it right?

How is putting in a weak RSX GPU making it the most advanced? As much as I think the PS3 is powerful, and will do alright in the gaming world, it was more internal technology politics than putting out the best machine. The more I read about the RSX, the more I'm disappointed about it. The Cell? Well, I've had access to certain public spec sheets, and those SPUs offer TREMENDOUS opportunities, but since the 360's 3xPPU makes it easy to equate, porting to use those SPUs is difficult, as they do nothing for 3d, but can handle all of the physics. I personally think 2xPPU/4xSPU would have made a KILLER gaming processor.

I never said the loosing exclusives was playing it right or that it is the most advanced.

I said that after the original issues it has all been taken into Sonys stride and they are playing it right with the cuts of price and specs.

I said it was very powerful and well, comparing it to the last generation of home gaming (PC excluded) it is a big step.

Gotcha, and I couldn't agree more. Sony has really done a tremendous job of repairing a botched launch. See what competition does? It's a great thing.

i hope this means more games that i like for the PS3.
