to sum it up, the guy's PS3 wouldn't work so he sent it in to Sony to get it repaired, and they wouldn't repair it for free because it had 'too much dust' and was 'a hazard to their technicians'.

Thought I'd post the photos of Reid's actually system so people could get a better perspective. gft77

Gay...
yeah yeah yeah, but who sends anything in like that??? I think this is one of those cases where someone was testing the waters. it's like if you spilled cola or something on your system and tried to send it back to be repaired for free...
No... it really isn't.

Dust =/= Coke.

Its just Sony being jerks, ONOEZ! DUST ON THE CONSOLE!
but how can you control the dust that is inside the system, because if you take it apart to clean it then it voids the warrenty. that is if it wasn't only the dust on the outside that was so 'hazardous'

either way, the PS3 shouldn't be getting that dusty...

see that's just it, we don't know where this guy had the system stored. Why not open a computer you've had for a year and see how much dust you have in that. hell I just opened my HP which I've had for about 6 months and it was full of dust.

btw for Fox to say "everyone is outraged" seems a little over-the-top. if the guy would have done a little something to his system things probably would have been cool. at least Sony isn't saying what MS did not too long ago whereas you can't have the system repaired for free unless you have the RROD.

After looking at the photos above, I wonder who thinks the guy neglected his system???

I would def. Sue them.

Maybe you should take a peak at the photos of the guys system first.

would you send a PS3 back to Sony to be repaired for free looking like this?

Yeah... lol, no harm in trying right?
Someone's got money to burn.
I wouldn't treat a 700$ brick like that xD

But I'd definatly get it "repaired" (by that I mean replaced)
At least try anyway. xD
OK.. so if he just polished the outside they probably would have repaired it.
Thus, it shouldn't have been a problem anyway.
Its the dust inside the system that made it not work, not the outside (if it is the dust that caused the problem anyways)
Even if he prepared this "incident" its in the companies best interest to deal with it.. or they'll get this kind of publicity.

But ya, who treats anything worth that much like that?

maybe we should try and see what Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony consider to be neglect. If there's that much dust on the outside of a system that's been around for almost a year (he got his as a gift) then there's no reason for it to look like that unless he had it in a very dirty place.

So if it was in a dirty place, it was beyond his control that the dust would get in. Sure you can argue that he could have kept it in a different place, but that doesn't cover up that fact that he didn't. It got broken, he didn't do it on purpose, they have to fix it. (If it was on purpose, then shame on him, but no company would risk it by refusing to repair the item and claim the customer was *gasp* wrong, and trying to get the better of them.

I could personally care less what Sony, Nintendo, MS, 3DO, Sega, or whatever other past company would consider neglectic.
Unless I did something to void the warrenty, I expect it to be repaired.

it was negligence on the guys part to let his system accumulate that much dust. the only quarrel i have with Sony is that they lied and said the dust is hazardous, which could be true, but nothing they couldnt handle.

LOL

it came out the box looking like that im sure of it!
the more i see it the more i get upset. someone needs to learn the value of a dollar.
Back in my College days, I worked at a computer/electronics hardware service center. I saw computers, stereos, TVs, and many game consoles come in. I read the consumerist article, which says that Sony claims the dust is too hazardous to the technician. I call bull, I've worked on MUCH dustier systems, and it's no hazard at all. However, under warranty, I think not. There's a real chance the dust caused his issues, and I do believe he should be required to pay for service.
Lol ive heard of this, the guys name was Ive, and sony told him "its either extreme neglection or an act of god" lol but seriously thats his fault what did he do play it at his job site of working construction?
The hazard to their technician's thing puzzles me. Just put on one of those dust masks or something? There, problem solved. Regardless of where this guy chose to keep his PS3 Sony had no right to refuse to repair it if you ask me.
