Last week, the PlayStation 3 turned heads throughout the industry when it outsold the Wii in Japan, pushing 65,000 units. It appears the the tidal wave that is the newly introduced 40GB PS3 doesn't appear to be slowing down much as it outsold Nintendo's console for the second week in a row.
While the total number dipped to 53,000 systems, it still outsold its foe by more than 20,000 units as the Wii only managed 36,000 sales.
After going through such a rough inaugural year with the PS3, it's interesting to see the turnaround Sony's managed with its console. Battling through bad press, over-priced systems and a lack of compelling games, it appears the PlayStation 3 has finally turned the corner and is now everything we expected it to be. Now, can it go for the trifecta?

A lot of people will have different opinions on this, but maybe the new price point is just low enough for people to take notice of the PS3 and decide it's time to pick it up. Several great games including Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank have recently come out which I'm sure didn't hurt one bit.
How about everywhere else? Did the PS3 only do better in Japan? Did it outsell the Wii in America, Europe or anywhere else? I'm sorry but that article makes it sound like 'OMG! It outsold in Japan now its suddenly going to surpass teh Wii!'
Is it because almost everyone in Japan, already have A Wii?
To continue whats selling great in Japan, from what GFT was posting.
DSL 76,069
PSP 65,609
PS3 39,178
Wii 36,230
PS2 8,855
Xbox360 6,525
GBASP 153
GBM 109
GC 38
DS 15
Maybe total units sold around the world would maybe make the wii ahead. Idk how the ps3 is doing in america.

I think the article was pretty clear in the information that it gave. If one chooses to read a couple paragraphs and somehow come to a false conclusion then that's the fault of the reader.
Anytime anywhere another system can beat Wii sales, and even if it's for 1 week or 2 is something really amazing. If people in general cannot imagine or will not bring themselves to the conclusion that such a feat is possible, then there's something wrong.
i must give credit where its due. and Sony has really, or has started to turn it around. i'd like to see how this play-outs in the next few months.
Yeah, I think the biggest thing is the price drop.
The price drop gets the credit for this... nothing else really. And it won't last long.
How so? (Other then the release of SSBB anyways :p)
It'll be accompagnied by another price drop, and by then it should be cheaper then the 360. (Not that it isn't already, considering all the things it comes with too that you have to buy seperatly for the 360, but then again, not everybody wants all those things...)

Not gonna happen. If Sony drops the price of the PS3 any further MS is going to forced into the dropping the price of 360's. And as far as 360 extras go there's Xbox Live, and what else? If you're smart you get one with a hard drive and the headset comes with it now.
EDIT: Holy crap! $100 for a damn wireless network adapter?! That's a rip off. I guess if you buy that you're paying more. The smart person would just go get a network cable to connect to their console.

I think your forgetting about a couple of things.
1. Price Drop<---------which you mentioned.
2. A number of high quality games just not coming out (ratchet and clank, Uncharted Drake's Fortune.)
3. A really good new add campaign.
Sony is like the comeback kid, and when your in 3rd place, there's no where else to go but up.
New Sony ads ftw. Almost entirely wipes out the bad memories of those terrible early efforts.

Or stay in third.
To the accessories, true, the PS3 has more default features, but the lack of a headset and hi-def cables is also a killer.

If you think the PS3 will stay in 3rd for the remainder of this product cycle then that's ok. I guess time will only tell, and we'll just have to wait and see.

It's not that that's "OK", it's an option. I never said I believe it will stay in third. I believe there's a good chance of a second or even first place finish (It will always be 3rd in America). I'm simply stating that's quite possibly an option, because most people now have a tarnished name about PS3, much like Windows Vista. This holiday will really help to give us an impression about the next 4 years.
Yeah, I can't wait to see how the Ps3 does in the long run.

Japan seems to be the exception, not the rule, but overall the gap is closing.

It's always kind of funny to see how people react to articles like this.
Let me state again, as it says in the source article...This has been a 2 week occurence in Japan. When people start pulling out sales numbers for the world and basically tell everyone that it doesn't matter because it's only Japan I smile. People get way too defensive, and it starts to show how biased they can be.

Right back at you. You get quite defensive/biased for Sony. You constantly attack the Wii too.

If you want to equate honesty with bias or defensiveness then that's ok, but I'd like you to find where I've been dishonest on any of the systems.
Let's also remember that I'm the one who told members not to buy a PS3 till the price dropped and better games came out. I won't call you biased or dishonest because I don't believe you have been. You've just chosen to change your mind on things, and that's something understandable. I've done my best to be consistent though and when others choose to turn a blind eye to a consoles issues, then I find that to be unfair to everyone and dishonest.
Congrats to Sony for these past two weeks in Japan, now give us what we want and release better games and let's see another price drop in the next couple of months.

You constantly attack the Wii too.
Today is the 1 year anniversary of being at Gamestop at 3:15am and getting my Nintendo Wii. I also spent party of my thanksgiving playing Mario Galaxy with my family, so you might wanna try beating a different drum.
Also, if complaining about bad games as filler until we get good games like Metroid Prime 3 or Super Mario Galaxy is bias or defensive, then I think you'll find many other Wii owners feel the same way and the opinion is much more majority then a biased minority.
