Recently Sony released the 'sales figures' for their PS3 during black friday.
Apparently PS3 sales were up 254% from last Black Friday and 154% up for all of the Playstation brand. But what exactly does that mean? Where are the actually sales numbers?
This also happened with the PSP with Sony talking about the PSP sales being up 120% and then stating the numbers later on.
What's up with this? It is obvious that they didn't sell as many numbers as Wii or 360 or else Sony would be proudly boasting that their console outsold the competition.
Thoughts? Comments?

Hmm..well I can understand people wanting to buy the new PSP since its slightly better.
Ps3 selling that much more? Iffy..*checks nextgenconsolewars or something*
It's because they're using a percentage spin tactic...
When people hear a percentage that's over 100 they think, "Oh WOW, it MUST be good! I'll have to check it out" yada yada yada... It's nothing more than a strategy.
Let's say it was slow last week and they only sold 10 consoles worldwide. Is it going to sound better to the public ear if they say, "We sold 30 PS3's this week!", or if they said, "Sales of the PS3 game console are up 300%" ? That's what it comes down to.
They're not out to impress themselves, the console is struggling, they already know it, their agenda is to make it sound good to us. So that's what they're TRYING to do...
too true. they know they're behind, and they need to impress us as much as they can so they can get on top. I don't doubt that they were outsold by both the Wii and the 360 on Black Friday; so instead of focusing on the difference between consoles, they're showing how their sales have improved since last year. it means that there's more interest in the system, and you can probably expect even more interest to be piqued as time goes on. if they're going up, then they'll keep going up.
well its working according to what is some sites are saying about sales of the PS3 in JP, yet here you can still walk into a store a find a PS3.
PS3 is doing awfully here in America.
See, pizzaturdell nailed it pretty well. A price drop, combined with a holiday shopping season, and previously low number of sales, It's not hard to have that increase. The Wii and 360 actually had higher percentage raises.
Or, and I'm just throwing this out there (

), maybe a 254% increase in sales is an extremely positive thing and they want to spread some postive news about their struggling console? What the hell do you expect them to say: "Our sales suck compared to our competitors and we give up."?
Yes, its a "positive spin", but that's just smart marketing when you're in Sony's situation. Nintendo used the same tactic every year with the GameCube. Stop acting like Sony a.k.a the evil empire is the first to impose this tactic.
just find the sales figures from last black friday and times it by 2.54

I'm not acting like Sony is the first to impose the tactic, I, as well as everyone else I am sure is simply answering the question at hand...
If the Wii were struggling and the situation were reversed I would be saying the exact same thing...Only Nintendo would be in it's place...

Right, every company would say the exact same thing in this situation. So the question is, in essence, rhetorical and comes off as nothing but a pathetic attempt at Sony-bashing.
Don't be so quick to judge the motive of others. You'll find yourself more often looking ridiculous rather than intelligent.
I just wish that when a company wasn't doing so well they would just say it and not hide behind percentages.

that would be a bad idea. it would make non PS3 owners thinking "hmm, Sony isn't doing so well, which means they are going to get less exclusive games, etc., so I guess I'll go and buy a 360".
Sony right now is just wanting to let people know that getting a PS3 is a safe-buy

Yeah but that's beat. On an ethical standpoint one can argue that it's a deceptive practice, snake-oil salesmen so-to-speak.
Why I say that is because anyone with commonsense will see that the console is struggling, yet Sony spins everything around to try and get the average idiot to dive for one. They're not the only industry to do it...Look at Hollywood and the tripe they peddle that is passed off as cinema these days...It goes for many things.
I think what he's saying is that it would be a breath of fresh air to many of us to have a huge corporation say, "Hey look, we've got this great investment we've made, right now it's being overshadowed by an array of other things, but if you trust us we promise not to let you down." Instead they basically just try playing it off and say, "We're great. Our sales are up 300% aren't we are awesome buy us 'cause we're the best!" Honestly, the people that base their lives and what they do with them on honesty and integrity become disgusted by this and grow a further distaste for ANY (mind you I said 'ANY') company that pulls that kind of garbage. I've lived in America long enough (too long) to be sick and tired and know better than to fall for that kind of B.S...

A breath of fresh for you, followed by bankruptcy for the company in question.
I don't recall the "We're the best" part in this article, but ask yourself this: If you were considering buying a PS3, would you honestly be persuaded to finally buy one if Sony admitted that they were in big trouble rather than that sales have greatly improved? Not to mention that they have to consider their investors and third-party developers that are quickly jumping off the bandwagon. Do you think that they would rather find that Sony has improved dramatically in the last year, or hear Sony whining about their poor sales and feeling sorry for themselves?
My point is that there is no winning with some of you. If they show that sales are way up from last year, they are "trying to hide something", but if they post actual sales numbers showing that they are still trailing their competitors, let me guess you would be praising Sony for their honesty?
Dood you are a mongoloid. I am here voicing an opinion, whether you agree or not and you come strolling in here like you are lord god almighty mr. know it all. I know what I want and I am stating it when it comes the way a company does business. The way I presented how I thought Sony should have approached the situation wouldn't come off as a whine either, that's your interpretation and it just so happens to be one conjured up in the magical land of misconstruity. The whole "We're the best" thing is implied by their approach, anyone with the ability to read between the lines a little should be able to see that. Say whatever you want to say about that, but tossing retarded figures out for the public to swallow is trash to me. The same way WalMart advertises their fried chicken as being, "So good they guarantee 120% satisfaction." It's one thing not to flinch when you're not doing so hot, but to try and convey to everyone that you're number one is a deluded strategy that may or may not work. I'll put my money on that it won't but that's something for time and numbers to really tell.
Honestly dude, you're nothing but a typical tool that I see in Sony forums that gets his panties in a bunch because someone is saying something that goes against the grain of what the Sony teat sucklers want to hear. It is not like we're a bunch of ignorant fanboys in here saying ,"PS3 SUX HAHA LAWL LAWL OH MAN THEY PHAIL...blah blah blah". If you can't handle the fact that people are going to post their thoughts on how they don't like the way Sony spun their numbers in an intelligible manner, you should honestly save yourself the embarrassment and bite your tongue rather than coming off as another typical Sony crusader who is going to jump down the throats of anyone who has something to say about the PS3's shortcomings.
So I would like to see a large corporation try a different tactic... BIG DEAL! You don't think it will work. Good for you, what's your mailing address? I'll FedEx you some cookies. Has a large scale company tried something the way I suggested it before? Nope. So how do you know it won't work? You don't because it hasn't happened. You're basing your judgment off of assumptions of things that have never happened before. This is why businesses fail many of times, because they are afraid to try radical new strategies that most people would find to be off the wall. I'm not saying Sony is going to fail, but for being in last place what do they really have to lose now anyway? A minuscule number of exclusives? Give me a break... All these people worry about is money, if they had the balls to do something new, maybe they wouldn't have to worry so much.
Dood you are a mongoloid.
Take you pick as to what you meant by mongoloid...
1. resembling the Mongols
2. Anthropology. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of one of the traditional racial divisions of humankind, marked by yellowish complexion, prominent cheekbones, epicanthic folds about the eyes, and straight black hair, and including the Mongols, Manchus, Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Annamese, Siamese, Burmese, Tibetans, and, to some extent, the Eskimos and the American Indians: no longer in technical use.
3. (often lowercase) Pathology. (no longer in technical use) of, affected with, or characteristic of Down syndrome.
4. Anthropology. a member of the peoples traditionally classified as the Mongoloid race: no longer in technical use.
5. (usually lowercase) Pathology. (no longer in technical use) a person affected with Down syndrome.
Either way you were trying to be racist or bigoted whether you were talking about a race of people or someone with Down syndrome. I suggest you stop using words that you probably don't know the meaning to, because they can be offensive.

Yes, clearly Walmart's fried chicken slogans are closely related to Sony's factual sales statistics. Sony really shouldn't have said "We're number 1!" in their release either...

And how typical of an anti-Sony crusader to immediately resort to calling me "another typical Sony crusader who is going to jump down the throats of anyone who has something to say about the PS3's shortcomings" the second I try to bring some logic to a Sony-bashing article that makes no sense. Clearly I must be a PS3 fanboy for blaspheming that Sony actually made a smart business decision rather than supporting some nonsense about "hiding something" behind factual statistics.

Did you pause to think why no company has ever tried your suggestion before? Or do you honestly believe that making yourself look bad is a sound business strategy? I like the part where you say that all they care about is money. Where have I heard that before? Oh yes, every single business or company that has ever tried to turn a profit seems to have employed this strategy. How selfish of them...
Ok pizzaturdell and GlueGun18, you guys can agree to disagree. This back and forth between each other is done.
