The Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick has come out and stated that he believes that all next-gen consoles, the Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, and Microsoft Xbox 360, must fall to the $199 price point within the next two years in order to appeal to the mass market.
This is a bold claim as he is a big supporter of the Nintendo Wii stating that they are setting the standard right no in terms of pricing and such as it is selling even though technically it is not the most powerful console.
He stated, "We realized that, much like Nintendo, the pathway for success and the highest operating margin leverage on the Wii is a relatively small number of titles that really capitalize on capabilities of the hardware," Kotick said.
"Some of our competitors are doing a lot more talking about how they’re organized than innovating for the Wii and if (publishers) are going to be successful they are going to have to step up to the level of innovation that Nintendo has proven themselves capable of."
He stated "In the next 24 months they all will need to be at that $199 price point," talking about the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii.
He also stated that within the next two years you can easily see Nintendo dropping the price point of the Wii down to around $129.

I doubt any of this will happen anytime soon, look how long the PSP has been out, and the fat one is still around $150. So I think in at least 2 years time, the Pre-Played versions will be $199 maybe.
ya this seems stupid to me. the wii could maybe be 200, but not until the hype has gone down. nintendo is selling as many wiis as they can make, so why the heck would they drop there price? as for the 360 and ps3, unless manufacturing prices drop suddenly for some reason, i highly doubt this will happen, they wouldnt make any money on the systems so they wouldnt do it. of course when the next gen consoles come out, then you will see the wii at 120$ and the 360 at 150$ maybe the same for the ps3, but not until were about to get a new set of consoles.
With the Wii demand where it is now, I don't think it needs to go to $199 this time next year, unless Nintendo wants to keep up the record sales (which they will likely do). Regardless, adjusted for inflation, we're still paying more NOW, in December 2007, 2 years into this gen, for the Xbox 360 and PS3 than we did at launch for their Xbox and PS2 counterparts. (Keywords: Adjusted for inflation).
I think this represents the problem, and why the PS2 still outsells the PS3, and isn't that far behind the 360, a bump in graphics and a few new games that are no longer coming out for PS2 just aren't worth it for people. $349 for a console (face it, the arcade package sucks), or $399, is still too much. (People honestly don't care that it's blu-ray, if I'm in the market for a console, I'm looking for just that, a reasonably priced console. You'd have to find someone who's also looking for a movie/entertainment device.)
I thought the USA already had a 199 Wii...?
Ah, here it is £180 which translates to $360 give or take 10-30.
No way will we get a £100 wii.
Wii, £100? In two years? Its possible.
I agree, in a couple years it's definitely possible. That's not really important though unless you don't already have one. I plan on buying either a PS3 or a 360 by then anyhow.
i can see this happening for wii, but not for PS3 or 360. they're already loosing money by making the system in hopes of making it up in game sales.

But after a long period of time, won't the components to make the systems become cheaper? Which will result in cheaper prices?
yes, which is what i said, but of course by that time, they will already be working on the next gen system. we will be looking forward to a Nintendo Zuu or xbox 720 or ps18... or whatever.

2011 at the earliest, perhaps 2012 at the latest.

5 years from now sounds about right. plus i hope Nintendo can come up with a good name. zuu. lol.
i dont see the xbox360 and ps3 getting to be as cheap as the wii anytime soon. if they did though, i would definitely pick up a 360
The wii's are selling great, it will be a LONG time before a price drop, even maybe new colors.
