Transformers director Michael Bay has accused Microsoft of sowing seeds of confusion in the HD DVD / Blu-ray war for its own digital download-aim ends.

"What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about", Bay has said in a post in the forums on his website.

"That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just [to] embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu-ray", he continued.

"They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."

do you think this is true? I mean, they are pretty bold words coming from Michael Bay

I wouldn't put it past Micro$oft but I don't believe it's true. They have spend a good bit of money on developing and implementing HD-DVDs.
yeah that is true, but one could say the reason behind it is just to positivly make sure that bluray doesn't win, to further their chances of having digital downloads be the norm
Microsoft will be fine if Blu-ray succeeds. Blu-ray uses the AVC-1 codec, which is entirely designed/owned by Microsoft.
It may be true, and I guess that would account for the lack of media blitz of HD DVD, but I think digital downloads as the dominant way of getting content is still years off, and I think Microsoft realizes this. Before it can really become all that viable, everyone has to have a decent high speed internet connection or they have to figure out a way of compressing their information much smaller to keep the downloads small.
This is a win win situation for microsoft, HD-DVD is a big part of them and they do have a hand in the development of Blu-Ray.

The Microsoft digital step forward is a long time off perfection, all remains to be seen.
