Full Version: Dreamcast 2 in the works?

SEGA Corporation has filed a new application to protect the trademark Dreamcast - sparking rumours that the Japanese publisher is planning on making a shock return to the console manufacturing market with the Dreamcast 2.

The application, sent to the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Applications and Registrations Retrieval (TARR) dated August 13 2007, relates to:

"Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs".

Web chatter suggests the proof is in the detail of the application - the original Dreamcast didn't have a floor mat accessory and the Dreamcast's Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is far from the flash memory cards we know and use today - although we'd say that the VMU is pretty similar to the modern day memory cards.

The filing could, of course, simply be a further effort from SEGA to protect the Dreamcast name. According to the USPTO the original Dreamcast trademark is still active. However, the two descriptions are very different. You can see the original trademark description HERE.

We've contacted SEGA UK for comment. We'll update you on this potentially megaton story as we get it.

I really doubt this would happen, but one never knows. I mean with the success of the Wii, Sega could be looking at a console that doesn't cost a great deal of cash to make and offer games that are less expensive then the higher end consoles out there.
I could only HOPE that Sega would rejoin the gaming market. I loved the Genesis/Dreamcast, and I really would love to see another Sega system, back when they made great games. They primarily filled my taste for arcade type games with kick-ass replay-value. If they made the new system with online for those games, and maybe the Lindbergh arcade tech (Intel P4 3.0 GHz, 512 RAM, proprietary graphics), it would have nice graphics, low cost, and could potentially make a killing.
Could it be possible? Wow to them if they tried this.
The gaming market has become increasingly unoriginal since SEGA left it. I doubt but hope this is true
I sense another wii, but since it's sega, it's going to have nice graphics....

DreamLoaded anyone?
Sadly enough, I'm afraid that if Sega very did make another system it would go by the wayside of so many of their other systems where they decide to just drop support and leave gamers with the bag. I had a Saturn, I had a Dreamcast, and I loved them both, but I felt like I've been burnt twice by Sega, So if it did happen, I wouldn't be an early adopter because of their track record.
Wow... We already have 3 console companies, and another may be on the way? True or not, still a cool rumor.
SEGA was a console company aswell...They just failed with the dreamcast.
I would think Sega would avoid embarrassing themselves again.
I've always found the Xbox/Xbox 360 the spiritual successor to Sega, and maybe why I've always liked the Xboxes.

thats what i'm thinking. i mean what could they offer the the Wii, PS3, or 360 doesnt have?

Sega would more than likely try to chase Nintendo's glory by making a fun system, but slightly better graphics. Sega's alot like Nintendo tho, so I wouldn't expect something rivaling the PS3 or 360. it'd be the Wii's rival. good luck trying to get into that market

more than likely i think this is just Sega trying to protect what few things they have left
You know what I think? It's cheap enough to make the Dreamcast (which had a large following after its death), for $49.99 now. They could make a production run again, and undercut all the current gen consoles, while releasing games for a slightly less powerful, cheaper console. Because eventually, the PS2 will die off. Then again, I think the GD-ROM would hold the DC back too much.
possibly, but you have to realize that companies make the majority of their money from the games, not the systems. would the small library of DC games really make Sega enough money to make it viable? highly doubtful, especially when most of the DC's good games were ported to another system later on

Maybe in America it did, in Japan it was a hit.

uh oh, i smell "the video game crash of 2010"...
I don't think there will be a Dreamcast 2 but anything is possible. While it would probably fail there's no telling though. Look at how Nintendo sorta came back after the Gamecube with the Wii. There are a ton of games that I loved playing on the Dreamcast and I even liked the controller with the grips it had. I'd be interested to see what they could come up with but I highly doubt anything is on the way other than some games for the current systems.
I always wanted Apple to make a console, regardless if it would be successful or not.

iGame or iConsole or something *dreams*
