well yesterday I finaly applied for a part time job (yay

), and chose night shift stocking groceries... because I like the night more than day
but now I just thought, I am only 17 (I graduated HS already though), but is there a law or something here in the US that says you need to be 18+ to work at night? (10pm-6am) because someone told me it was, but then at the UPS store they were highering people age 17+ to work a 4am-9am shift, but I dont know if 4am constitutes as morning or whatever.
(and if there is a law, but varies by state, im in kansas)
I'm not sure about federal law.
But you're not allowed to handle money. So as long as you're only stocking, I think you're good. If you're illegal, it'll be the business that gets fined, not you.
No, the government will assassinate you for being OVERLY capitalistic >_>
remember when you were younger and you were in JRHS and had a stupid blue card to work the hours between school and sundown?
well this is kinda simliar. if youre finished with HS already, chances are youre not breaking any union laws being 17 and stocked at a grocery store at night. its also not child labor anymore beacause youre over 16 years old.
my vote is that its purely acceptable. if the grocery store is willing to hire you for that shift, then take it! i dont see it being a red flag here. only time its a necessity to be 18+ is for contract signing such as retail chains and even then they dont work at the hours you are wanting to work at. contact a union delegate for the supermart if you are highly unsure. as far as i know, supermarkets have a union [in NY its a fact] see if theres a number to contact someone and state your predicament
how much longer you have till youre 18 anyways?
As far as I know you are fine.
The only thing you have to be sure of it to avoid going over 40hrs. Minors aren't allowed to work overtime by law (very lame, I know), and that is the only thing that has to be watched. I was fired when I was 17 for working 3 minutes over 40 hours...It was the dumbest thing in the world, but they hired me back a month later anyway...
yeah im not worried about that, i put down part time so I'll only be working an average of 24 a week most likely
yeah for the most part youre fine.
over 16 [yes]
out of HS or a Senior [yes]
pretty much good.

32 hours for fulltime work
anything over that breaks the minors law not child labor. im telling you wenis, contact a union delegate and ask them these questions
well i dont know anything about the stores union delegates, etc., but it is 40 hours a week for fulltime i know though (8 hours a day, 5 days a week aka 9-5)

ask your manager- is it a major supermarket store like king kullen, walbaulms, food lion, pathmark, ect? those i know for a fact are union
the store is called Dillons, the company is Kroger I believe... and I really don't know anybody that even works there including the manager, since I applied online. I asked my dad though, he says that he doesn't think there is a federal law but that it does vary by store.
WOW, i was about to go to bed (at 9am haha) and then the phone rang and it was some lady from the store, she said she wants me to come in for an interview at 11 this morning :O. i am soo not ready for an interview...
she also asked me if I was 17, if I graduated highschool, and that i was gonna be 18 in march and i said yep thats right,,, so I guess I can work night shift becuase she also said that its good the hours i chose, since they're needing peoplt to work that shift
wow I just got the job lol, feels weird
apparently age doesn't matter, BUT i'm not allowed to use a box cutter or box crusher until im 18 lol. making 9.15 an hour 24 hours a week isn't that bad either
Kroger is a big company so they should know what is or is not allowed in your location. I used to work nights (Night Supervisor) and it was alright except it threw off my internal clock. That plus going out late at night and not returning until the early morning. I don't think I've ever recovered from it.
