So I have finally decided to get with the times and get myself an HDTV, but the choices are killing me. I've pretty much sold myself on going with an LCD over Plasma, unless someone can give me a really good reason not to, in the 42" to 47" range and in the <$2000 price range (Canadian $, though I assume US sets are priced similarly). If anyone can make some recommendations on what or what not to buy it would be super helpful (and will result in some postive rep).

Best Buy has a sale right now on a 42" LG (1080p) with a 1000 Watt LG surround sound system for $1500 (regular $2350). It seems like a nice value, but I am a little skeptical because I've heard that LG TVs aren't quite as strong as competing brands like Sharp, Sony, Samsung, etc. Opinions?

Also, what is the deal with DLP HDTVs? They are significantly cheaper but aren't nearly as popular as LCD or Plasma. What is the disadvantage to these sets?
theres an electronics place near me called 6th ave electronics that sells discount tvs and affordable prices- theres also pc richards which has an outlet store from what i understand. i also have a sony outlet store out by me as well and they have refurbished Tvs at prices you wouldnt even believe!

if all that fails which it might in canada.....try a wholesale membership club such as Bjs, Costco, Sams, ect. they have a great selection of LCD HDTVs around the range you want with great brands to boot!

that best buy deal though sounds great- dont know how much lower youre gunna find! plus does it really matter in 'brand" anymore? honestly.....i mean i can see a difference but it mainly has to do with the cable you use [MONSTER FTW!] more so than the manufacturer

i used to have a DLP but i wasnt a fan- found it to be awefully grainy in picture. thats my opinion though and this was also a few years back [like 3 max]
You sold on lcd's cause if you're a hard core gamer a plasma is better (plasmas have less ov a delay for games so there not as blurry)but if u will watch a lot of movies in the dark then lcd's is you're man(lcd's are brighter in the dark)
*moving to tech and gadgets cause it'll probly get better answers there on whats useful, better, and priceworthy*
Go with a SHARP Aquos 1080p LCD. I've had my 42" for a little over a year and love it!

That deal sounds great. I know people with LG HDTVs, and they all love them.

Go LCD, if you do a lot of gaming yes plasma may rock but you will encounter several problems like things burn onto the screen I think?
Ya that and the fact that the screen is dimmer but if u get a high-end LCD the blur won't show as much YEA Leo Laport lol watch his show ALL the time So a plasma= equals HARD core gamer and action movie fan LCD= Movie fan that watches in the dark.Smile
For me, the difference between plasma and lcd isn't that noticeable that I would care that much, I'm happy with some old fairly small tv for playing gamesIgnorance is bliss
lol im still living in tube days...no 0ms delay thoToungue
I'll have to post my tv's someday, we live in 1980 tv wise.
LOL I'm sure I've got a wooden one in my attic lol

I'm trying to convince my mother to get a LCD, I prefer over plasma personally.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I will head out tonight and maybe make a decision between two TVs on sale: the aforementioned LG package, or they also have 42" Sharp Aquos for $1350 tonight only, and maybe I could still get a decent home theater package for another $400 or so. I've heard the Aquos is an excellent TV so I'm sorta leaning towards that.

The reason I chose LCD over Plasma is mainly because of the burn-in issue with plasmas, and also apparently the resolution is better on LCD, and lifespan is longer (though apparently plasmas are catching up). Also a store clerk once told me that if a Plasma breaks, it is toast and can't be fixed, but an LCD can. Any truth to that? As for response time the Aquos is listed at 4ms and the LG at 5ms which, from what I understand, is very acceptable?
great deals and YES! you can get an affordable great quality surround sound speaker system for under 400$ and i mean like top brands like bose, onkyo, sony, ect. surround sounds arent really that expensive to begin with.

go with the sharp aquos. i hear those are very nice! probably even nicer than the LG. check out http://www.cnet.com and see what the reviews are for those brands. maybe customer recommendations could help you. i always trust cnet in reviews they never stear me wrong.
do NOT get an lg surround system. Mine is possessed and does what it wants and wont' load half of my crap. They also have horrible customer service.

The ps3 upconverts the normal dvds much better.

Get a Denon surround system, it's one of the best around. Or a Bose.

I love LCD. I got this 37" at target for 688 last summer, and it doesn't mess up at all. The picture is great on it, it's an Olevia.
Got a Sharp Aquos. Like it so far! Didn't get a surround sound system though. I think I'll wait until boxing week when there should be some good deals, and my cousin is an employee at Best Buy so I can mooch his discount. Thanks guys.
