I don't own a PS3 but I read the Network is free. Meaning multiplayer is totally free or are there extra fees? I'm just curious.

yes everything is free, except downloading games from the playstation store costs money. but obviously you'll be notified if it costs money though. but as for just playing games online, yeah its totally free just like PS2 online

As Wenis mentioned it is totally free, and it seems they will be expanding it come next year to possibly incorporate some cool features.
