Full Version: Reggie: Nintendo Still Considering Voice Chat For Wii

The Wii is slowly but surely gaining titles with online play. Games such as Mario Strikers Charged, Batallion Wars II, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, and the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Brawl all contain online multiplayer capabilities, but all lack what has rapidly become considered by many to be a key component: a means of communication with opponents and teammates--namely, in-game voice chat.

Many have complained about the inability to communicate with others online--an example being unable to strategize with teammates in BWii--but it seems Nintendo may finally have an answer. In development. Potentially.

Though it is nothing definite, Reggie Fils-Aime has provided a glimmer of hope in a Nintendo conference call and is quoted saying that he "wouldn't be surprised at all" if voice chat made its way to the Wii. He went on to say "It's something we value and constantly look at."

Hopefully we'll hear more about a product potentially being developed in the future--the DS already has voice support, so it should follow that the Wii gains such an ability. Maybe, some day, we can strategize and insult. Let's just hope there's a mute option so we don't have to listen to 12 year old strings of obscenities.

Now, if only we could hear something about a Hard Drive...

This is a MASSIVE positive. Hopefully HDD is next.

DO IT!

lol. or blu-ray. if, and when we get voice chat on Wii, you'll probably only be able to talk to ppl you've exchanged friend codes with.

I meant Hard Drive... not HD.
Yeah, I'd prefer the Hard Drive over mic usage but that's just me. Hopefully they will do this though.
I want ViOP, it really needed in a vast majority of Wii games. Sad that DS has better online service then the Wii.

Don't give them any ideas. They're overprotective as is.

I want a head set so bad.. lol.
Portalized.
if they do have it, it obviously needs to be wireless.. wonder how much it would cost. not that that would matter, price would be the last thing to worry about if nintendo ACTUALLY did make headsets
Yeah this headset would finally make all the Wii-hating-cuz-of-crappy-online complaints stop...or at least cease untill they find other things to complain about. Now I just hope that they will release this in time for their online heavy hitters AKA brawl. But i doubt it. Maybe they can provide an update for past online games to be Headset compatible???

And jack up the system price by 200%?

Seriously, if we're making a (sensible) wish list,
* Ditch Friend Codes
* Voice Chat
* Social Lobby/IM/Buddy List/etc
* Additional Storage
* Higher Definition Output over component
* Removal of Region Locking
* Better Computer Support (Streaming Video/Music)

Not even by a longshot. Nintendo won't even consider it.
* Voice Chat
Probably the most likely in this list
* Social Lobby/IM/Buddy List/etc
All depends on the developer, publisher and server. Nintendo won't do it but EA does already.
* Additional Storage
Not before the voice chat. And even then, I don't expect it even next year.
* Higher Definition Output over component
Not gonna happen.
* Removal of Region Locking
Don't get your hopes up.
* Better Computer Support (Streaming Video/Music)
Could happen, but I doubt Nintendo cares. I don't really.

i think an IM / blog (myspace) type channel are definately possibilities for wii.

a bluetooth headset would be awesome for wii, or just bluetooth headset compatibility so you can use any old headset would be good (am i right in thinking wii uses bluetooth?) also for a chaper option something that plugs into the botom of the wiimote?
it would deff be bluetooth because you'd need to have the nunchuck plugged into the wiimote sometimes
They should just add an update that allows the DS headset to be recognised by the Wii. And if they do make a whole new headset and its priced like the DS one I won't mind. Since the DS headset is only $20AU. That's dirt cheap.
Where would it plug in?
Well they COULD make a Bluetooth plug that goes into the Wii Remote, and has an open slot for the Nunchuk, CC, etc.

I would be very surprised if Nintendo actually made a headset for Wii online, though.
Very.

in one of wii's USB's or the Wiimote.

I was thinking that before also until I realised like FELX said that the Wii has USB ports which could be used for the headset, bluetooth or not.
