The PS3-exclusive action game, Heavenly Sword recently got a 1.10 patch. Right now, the contents of this 18MB download are mysterious. It has been confirmed that DualShock 3 support has finally been added to the game, for those lucky enough to have imported the rumble-ready controller. But, certainly the patch must hold other surprises. 18MB is a lot of data for just rumble alone ...

Really? I'd say that's really small for addition of a new type of controller.
Think about all the menu graphics and different scenarios you'd require.

Probably a few bugfixes in there too though.

Good stuff right here, but perhaps Sony should get those DS3 controllers in the US soon. I'm sure there are 1 or 2 bugfixes, but 18 mb seems about right for added rumble. Remember, it has a different rumble length/strength for each of the many different actions that will give force feedback.
O joy. Rumble.

I thought Sony said Rumble was too last gen?

Actually, since it's relevant...

Back when I had PS3, I never even noticed the lack of rumble, nor seemed to care. The other immersive effects of current gen games make rumble almost useless *such as a shaking screen in resistance. I think rumble's more of a neccisary additive to Wii games.

As much as I love having rumble, sc7 raises a good point, it's not really that necessary.

I still wish I had one of these: http://www.ultimategamechair.com/product...8.42105263

the most recent multi-platform game/demo i plaed was burnout: paradise. i heard that the game will have rumble functionality when it's released for the PS3, but you def. notice a lack of rumble from the sixaxis with that game. going over railroad tracks, bumps, ramps, or hitting objects, or crashes. on the 360 i was always aware of the rumble. playing racing sim games like forza or GT, youre always aware of rumble since it's used to gage the friction of the tires to the road. without it, youre basically left with the sound of the tire screech intensity which, imo, isnt a better or equal alternative.

going back on-topic. i guess adding rumble is cool. im just not interested in the game though.

I agree with greaser on this. If you like the game then rumble will be a welcomed feature, but if you don't think highly of it already then rumble will do nothing to sway your opinion.
In some genres it's definitely more important than others. Unfortunately, after playing the Heavenly Sword demo, I was disappointed, so that was never a game that captivated my interest. However, it's a welcome addition that games already released are getting rumble for the PS3, proving it will most likely be a dominant available feature for the entire console's lifespan. The only downside is that Sony is admitting they should have included it from the get go.

I guess that whole lawsuit between Sony and Immersion over the dual shock technology must have slipped your mind.

PS3 Ready To Rumble With Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360?

PS3 has been been (arguably) underperforming against Wii and Xbox 360, but is Sony’s next-gen console now ready to rumble? It certainly appears so, since Sony and Immersion have finally settled their litigation and are now friends once again.

This opens up the door for a new SIXAXIS that would rumble with force feedback, just like the Dual Shock 2.Can a single element like this change the dynamic of the race with Wii and Xbox 360? Time shall tell, naturally.

The announcement of the Immersion/Sony lovefest follow.

Immersion Corporation, a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced the companies have agreed to conclude their patent litigation at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and have entered into a new business agreement to explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation format products.

“We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us,” said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. “Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products.”

Immersion will receive the amount of the judgment entered by the District Court, which includes damages, pre-judgment interest, costs, and interest, in addition to retaining compulsory license fees ordered by the District Court which were already paid. Terms of the business agreement between the parties provide SCE with certain new rights with respect to Immersion’s patent portfolio. Additional financial terms are not being disclosed. The conclusion of this litigation and the agreement will have no material impact on Sony’s consolidated earnings forecast announced on January 30, 2007.

“We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers,” said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group Chief Operating Officer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies.”

According to Wikipedia.org, Sony announced a settle with Immersion at March 01, 2007 and if we remember the PS3 was launch on November 11, 2006

Rumble isn't something I worry about with a game honestly. I have Heavenly Sword but It's waiting to be played as I am about half way through FFXII on the DS. Then I gotta go back to Folklore.

That's legitimate, sure. It doesn't change the fact they could have put it in for their competetors anyway.
Let's look at the other LIES/excuses that got recanted.
-It throws off the SIXAXIS
-It's "Last Gen"

So they're still admitting that their excuses were a bunch of bull.

And by the way, there's no need to be so sarcastic...

The funny thing about Game Console Manufactures is that when they either don't wanna put technology into a system or can't, they come up with all sorts of reasons why they shouldn't or won't.  Now before you hold Sony's feet to the fire about "lies/excuses" you'd better think back to the other console makers and all the bull they've talked over the years Smile  Otherwise you just seem very bias.

btw in my previous comment I wasn't being sarcastic. I just couldn't imagine that an intelligent man like yourself didn't know about the lawsuit before you chose to make your comments.

**ducks for cover**

I know, who has made more lies than Nintendo over the course of the GCN? Whenever a manufacturer is down, they have to lie a little to keep some support around, it's only natural. I really wasn't saying I care that Sony is admitting they're wrong either, I'm just more saying that this could be another blow to the Sony PR department.

The Sony PR department isn't fired yet?!

I'm curious to see what else this patch might do if anything at all. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is just for rumble, but something tells me that there might be something more to it...just speculation, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Maybe so, but you can't deny the crappy job they've been doing.
