Full Version: Question Concerning External HDD Mod

This idea came to me all of a sudden this morning, but I have no idea how to go about creating such a device. If anyone here has any ideas, or knows if it's possible... please free to steal the idea and make every Wii owner happier.

What I was thinking of was the creation of a hybrid SD Card and extrenal HDD solution. What I mean is... an SD Card device that has a USB cable attached to it that you can use to plug directly into your computer OR maybe connect it to an external HDD somehow.

It seems like something that could could be done with clever wiring, but I've never done anything like this so I have no idea how to make this idea a reality.

Anyone out there got any experience with this kind of thing?
Not possible Sad

I'm sure the top hackers have tryed it, and phailed Sad

Also, guys - notice all the new members we have asking questions since Xmas Big Grin
Haha, you should see wiichat. WL has an advantage not being the top google search.
Unfortunately, it would be totally possible, but useless. The issue is that nothing can be read directly from the SD slot Sad
Nothing can read directly from the SD Card slot... interesting.

I thought I had actually found an expensive solution! But... if nothing can read from the SD Card slot then even this over-priced solution won't work.

The solution I found was the Trans Mem SD Card for the Wii, with buit-in USB adapter.

I was thinking that if you take out the SD Card slot plate (You'd have to open up your Wii to get it out), and attach a USB extension cord onto the USB adapter end, you could then connect the other end into an available USB slot on your PC.

Unfortunately not even this will work...
All sounds good in theory Sad

Repped for the effort Smile
Nah the only way I figured it could work would be to Hijack the IO between the on-board flash memory and the Wii motherboard and then send it to a larger flash/HDD

Precisely, but the system software may be made to handle only 512mb of data, no more.

That wouldn't be very smart of Nintendo.
Of course memory will eventually become a problem, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't seal any hope for a solution by restricting the amount of data allowed for use.
hey, If I had dispensable Income I'd be working on a mod right away, but I can't afford to brick a Wii Right now Toungue
You're confident you could do it? I didn't think you were much of a hardware whizz. I'm wrong? Big Grin

You don't learn that stuff out of books

Yeah, anyone can do it, all you need is a lot of time, a multimeter, perhaps a pinout of the flash chip and then a soldering iron.

I have a GCSE in Electronics XP
