Because we'd take more responsibility if we saw the damage caused, says Metal Gear boss

Jan 4, 2008

Metal Gear daddy Hideo Kojima called for increased realism in videogames in a recent interview with Jade Raymond regarding videogame violence.

In the rather strange meeting, arranged on behalf of Famitsu magazine, Kojima told Raymond: "I don't think there are many games that tackle violence head on.

"When you hit someone or inflict pain, faces get disfigured for example, and I want to make games that show that sort of thing," he explained. Cue Jack Thompson's blood boiling.

"If you don't see the pain, you can't understand what you've done, and you'll pass through battles without taking responsibility for your actions," Kojima added. "I don't want to ignore that. I want players to think, even if it's just a little, about what violence and war are."

So, better graphics is basically what he's saying. But would showing the damage done to people's faces in games really make us accept responsibility?

Later in the chat, Raymond admitted taking inspiration from the Metal Gear games, and Kojima returned the compliment saying: "I think there are fewer developers around today who think about making a good game. As a creator, I find that sad, but when I see teams like the Assassin's Creed team it gives me confidence. I want Assassin's Creed to sell well."

what do you think? do you think more realistic war situations like disfigured faces really will make you "take responsibility" or will it just make people go "AWESOME!!!!"

i'm all for kojima doing this, i just hope they dont go completely overboard.

An old 2D fighter once had facial disfiguration in the form of bruises and various lumps. Guys (and girls) started looking pretty miserable after a while of being beaten on.

So long as they add varied expressions to the dead instead of just slackened features or just hiding them with a mask I'd think that to be a nice touch. Get that sensation of the misery you've inflicted across.
I hear Jack Thompson coming...
It would be great if Kojima could really make this feature apart of future games...Watching peoples face get dis-mantled would be quite fun.
Be careful what you wish for, because I think most people can see the writing on the wall, and the next person who becomes president will probably push congress towards some totally BS legislation against video game violence and we'll be put under a ball and chain once again by people who don't even play video games.

All that aside, facial disfiguration would be cool.
And this is where the PS3 starts to make a difference. Believe it or not, stuff like this requires significan resources, as you have to factor in the damage as processed throughout the entire game. This is where SPEs can become useful. Details that make the games "hyper-realistic".
