Xbox Live Diamond now requires membership fee

If you're familiar with the Xbox Live Diamond Card program, then you know that membership in it entitles you to all kinds of deals from a bunch of online retailers as well as retailers in your neighborhood. Some offers are rather good while others are worthless, but membership into the Diamond program has been free since its launch, so we've never complained. That is until now.

Starting in March, Microsoft's program partner Passport Unlimited will be taking complete control over the Diamond program and will begin charging an annual fee. $6.95 a year to be exact. Registration is closed until the transfer is complete and current members will keep their membership free of charge until their 2008 expiration date when Passport Unlimited will require payment to renew. Honestly, the program isn't super useful and we don't see many people forking over $7 to keep access to a free Taco Johns softshell taco coupon.
Then again, those tacos are mighty tasty.

In all honestly I have never even heard about Xbox Live Diamond. I may look into it later but for $7 it seems pointless. I wonder why Microsoft suddenly decided to slap a price on something that was free up until now. Has anyone else ever bought Xbox Live Diamond? Does this even excist? I think im going to stick with my Xbox Live Gold.

never heard of it, but who knows. if the discounts are good enough, then i'd consider getting it. if it's just gonna save me a dollar at GameStop each time i go, it wouldn't be worth it, but if there are good deals with it then i'm down. i do it with a lot of things, so why not with this too?

and who knows. the list of things may have been close to crap before, but now that they're charging they may be able to get bigger and better deals at more places, and expand their markets. if that's the case, it's not that expensive for a year. Barnes and Nobles is a $25/yr card but if you're like me and spend hundreds in there, then the 20% discount each time you go saves you at least $100/yr, and is then very, very useful.

You raise a very good point. Im going to look around and see if I can find some more info on the deals that are currently available.

EDIT:

Hollywood Video: Rent one movie or video game and get the second for free.

Etnies: Save 20 percent off Etnies skate shoes and apparel for surf, BMX and snowsports.

Sam Goody: Save 10 percent off hot DVDs and CDs at Sam Goody.

Carl s Jr: Buy one sandwhich and get a second one free at Carl s Jr, Quiznos Sub and others.

Cambridge Soundworks: Save up to 15 percent on Cambridge Soundworks speakers and other audio equipment

Those are the offers I found on a random site. Im not sure they are still available offers but thats just a taster I suppose.

Microsoft's online strategy is repeatedly getting worse and worse. I'm sick of being stuck up for every last dime I have for "tiers of service". PSN is looking better and better each day. Sure, PSN has nothing like this, but I don't like how they take something free and make it paid, it just takes away from XBL's advantages.

Well is $7 a year really that much? If Microsoft really push this then lots of offers will be available. Which would make the $7 worth while. I would prefer something for $7 and too be useful in some way, than something free yet its useless. Its all just depends how much Micrsoft push Xbox Live Diamond, if things stay the same or the offers are pretty pointless. Then Microsoft will be wasting their time and our time by trying to make us pay.

You're getting better at this, Snake. I also have heard nothing of Diamond so this doesn't come as a surprise to me. Not only would this annoy a few people who used it free but it will raise awareness and those who ain't 'the in' may look into it, just like you.
i have one. got it when they were free and i never used it. the offers given arent that great, imo.

i dont understand why they'd charge since this diamond program never seemed to take off.
it may be that they're planning on expanding the program...since it never took off, they felt the need to fix it up and market it with better offers. at least, one would hope.

they could just be doing it to skam people out of $7 a year...
i still havent gotten mine yet

I would still pay just $7 a year to have it.
