It seems like every-other-day a different movie studios either goes exclusive to Blu Ray or at least is no longer exclusive with HD-DVD. Right now the PS3 is only player available that has all the features to meet Blu Ray Profile 2.0.
I can honestly say that I've waiting to pick up my own PS3 simply because I wanted to wait and see what happened between Blu Ray and HD-DVD, and at this point it seems Blu Ray has one, and thus the PS3 seems like a much better value to a movie buff/gamer like myself.
I'm at the point in my life where I don't spend a great deal of time playing games. Correction, I generally start a game and play it a lot, and then it just ends up sitting collecting dust. The difference with the PS3 is that it's not just a video game machine, but will also play Blu Ray movies for me and also allow me to stream my recorded television shows from my Windows Media Center computer to my television which will be awesome.
What does everyone else think?
i think it has too,
if you are a movie fan and gamer and you want HD movies, why buy a standalone player for 4-500 bucks when you can get a game system too for the same moolah
I see the PS3 as a system that can only go up with it's game, and with the Blu Ray player that's considered the best on the market, I think it's become a pretty easy choice to pick one up...especially if your going to sell another system to get the cash.
Since I love movies I'm definitely thinking of picking up a PS3 now that it seems the war is close to if not already over. I only have DVDs now but once I get my new HDTV (1st one ever for me =D ) then I'll want to pick up either an XBox360 or PS3 to take advantage of it along with either HD DVDs or Blu Ray DVDs. I can definitely say that I WON'T be picking up any HD DVDs now.
I think we're along the same lines Mana in being huge movie fans (though I think you head to the theater a lot more then me). I have an HDTV and with it a great upconverting DVD player. I can wait a very long time until prices keep dropping, but at some point you gotta take the plunge (speaking for myself). I think I'll do some ebay listings this weekend and see how things work out.
I'm gonna buy it, when it gets games I want.
The Blu-ray/HD-DVD war isn't affecting my decision at all (I couldn't give a toss about either). However, the lack of decent games, the removal of backward compatibility from new models and the stupidly high price are most definitely affecting my decision.
Well, I've heard a rumor that there is yet to be another price cut this year for the PS3 but we'll have to wait to see if that's true or not. If I decided to get an XBox360 I would definitely get the Elite, which would cost me a little more over here than for the PS3. You still have to remember that with the PS3 you are also getting a blu ray disc player, which at the moment is not so cheap. If you are willing to wait until prices drop then it shouldn't be a problem for you. Nothing right now gamewise interest me on the PS3 either but that should eventually change.
i think 2-300 bucks is the threshhold for me, then i may take the plunge, its still a lot of money and i (like mana) need to get an HDTV first
Yeah, I've been saying I'm going to get one soon but I've been saying that for a long time. I will definitely have one by July and I have one already picked out but just doing some research on it to see if it's good or not. It's a Samsung 52" LCD with Full HD 1080p and 3 HDMI ports and a lot of other stuff, some of which I have no idea what the hell they are talking about... My HD noobness is showing.

When I finally do get it I want to play something on it that will look purdy.
52" is huge
post a pic of you watching 300 after you get it
Samsung FTW I have a Samsung HDTV and my HD computer monitor is the same and they're awesome. It's decided that I'll be putting my Wii, games, and accessories on ebay this weekend and hopefully earning some PS3 cash.
guess we wont be seeing you here anymore then, take care

It's good to hear that Samsung is a good brand for HDTVs and I'll definitely be getting 300 to watch on it. I can't believe I don't have it now since I loved the action so much. I'll watch it back to back with Shoot em' Up and have a guy's night. Finish up with some poker perhaps.

the format didn't really affect me as i figured both formats would be around and everything would be released on both. besides, i'm a long way off from an HDTV, so a player won't make much difference. just means i'll spend extra money for the same quality
there are other things affecting my decision
The format wars would't really effect my decision when considering a PS3. One reason, im happy with my DVD player. I will eventually own a PS3, when there is enough games to pull me in and when I get a job to but the thing. I suppose getting Blu-ray is always a positive though.
Yeah, it's an influence. I'm considering buying one in possibly two years time, like I did with PS2. Then I bought all the classics

That's probably not a bad idea for some with a great deal of patience Cosmic. I mean in a couple years you'll get the PS3 for cheaper and many of the great games will also be much lower in price.
the two things that were holding me off were
HDDVD Exclusivity
and a lack of backward compatibility

Well, the 80 gig (here in US), has enough software compatibility to run almost everything. I've checked the list and so far:
-DMC3
-FFXII
-Shadow of the Colossus
-Ico
-My 007 Games
And a bunch of others all run flawlessly
MGS3 and 2 run with only a few hiccups in the FMV sequences
I'm told there's still a chance I can pick up another 60 gig, I can only hope.
@gft, I sent you a PM about your decision
@drew
I'm selling my Wii, but I'm sticking around. I contribute plenty to the forum discussion outside the Wii areas, and I can even still discuss the Wii without one.
