Everyday it seems another crazy lawsuit pops up and every single day we pay no mind to the wacky turnings of the legal world - rarely do such patent infringements end happily and seldom do they bother us much. This new lawsuit though may be a little bit different...

Copper Innovations Group, a company we've never heard of before, is, according to GameSpot, suing both Nintendo and Sony for patent violation in their consoles. Copper is claiming that twelve years ago it filed a patent which "covers a method for connecting devices to a system and sorting their inputs by means of hardware identification numbers tied to each transmission".

Yeah, it's a vague patent, but that's the point. Copper Innovations is alleging that Sony and Nintendo have both violated that patent with their controllers. Both Wii and PlayStation 3 controllers use Bluetooth to connect to the main console, assigning each controller a player identity which remains fixed to the hardware.

The lawsuit specifically names a number of devices, including the PS3 Blu-Ray remote as well as the game controllers for both systems.

Where it gets really interesting though is in regards to the punishment being sought. Copper Innovations is wanting not only legal costs and damages covered by both companies, but also an injunction which would stop Sony and Nintendo infringing on the patent - driving the duo back to the drawing board. No, we can't see that happening either.

Does Copper Innovations have a leg to stand on, or are they money-grubbers of the worst kind?

This is at least the 5th wiimote sue we've heard of, no need to get to worried.
This is just a childish water balloon fight now... Nobody is relaxed in the IT world.

And would you mind removing the underline? Bold and Italic looks the best (IMO) I don't mind Smile

Nice find, reppage shalt ensue
Yeah right. Nintendo and Sony won't let this go to court. They'll either settle out of court or bring them in and crush them to death. No way they'd be able to stop them from making the Sixaxis or the Wiimote.
Seriously, they don't stand a chance against Nintendo or Sony. Taking on both companies is just asking to be slaughtered. Smile
i dont think nintendo would be worried about loosing money in the law suet.

if anything, they are worried from the bad publicity this can genrate, but then again, all publicity is good publicity
Look, if Nintendo and Sony really did infringe upon the patent, I don't think the legal suits would have let them file their patents in the firsat place.
O, Nintendo is getting a lot of money! Lets sue them so we can get rich!
This lawsuit is gonna stick like a lubed up stripper sitting an a good ole stainless steel sliding board that has been absorbing heat from the sun on an afternoon in mid July.
i have no idea what you just said ......

yeah, we've been dealing with lawsuit threads for about as long as the Wii's been out. none have done anything to Nintendo yet, so don't think this will be any different

actually, the name sounds familiar. i think this is old news and has been posted before
If that's the patent being breached, why isn't M$ involved in this suit?
Is this the same case we've been year about for a year now? Plus there's no way this smaller company can take on Nintendo or Sony, let alone both?
As if this small company (that nobody has ever even heard of before) thinks it has a chance of taking on Nintendo and Sony. They wouldn't stand a chance against just one of the companies, but both! They are just asking for some humiliation.
Realistically, I don't think they'll make it.

Both systems have been out for over a year, so why choose now? They've missed the lawsuit bandwagon.
wow. That is probably one of the dumbest ones yet. No need to worry tho, those guys are complete idiots if they think they can sue them this far into their success.
Every time some big product comes out everybody tries to capitalize on it.. Gets kinda boring after a while.
Well what about Cell phones? The ear buds use blue tooth, Speakers for the Black Berry
Resurrecting old posts is generally frowned upon at most message boards-- Granted, this thread is only a month deceased, but still.

Plus, you didn't even read the original post well enough before you pulled it back from the grave, because the patent isn't simply regarding bluetooth devices.
wowzerz..
