well as i've experience online on the Playstation 2 then Xbox live on the 360, it is honestly worth every penny. and wow, 50 bucks a year. that is a little over 4 bucks a month? surely you can afford that

No need for petty sarcasm, now. You haven't tried PSN or Steam I take it? The fact of the matter is there is very little keeping Xbox Live on the pedestal compared to these other services.

[Edit]

I'd mention Nintendo's service, but... yeah. Friend Codes. According to Nintendo everyone else on the internet is a pedo.

I didn't detect any "petty sarcasm" in his post. Really, it doesn't cost that much. You pay for what you get. If you want free online then stick with Nintendo's friend codes...

Correction, we're paying for what others are giving us (Or soon to be giving us) for free. Have you seen the billing plans Microsoft gives? Sure, the yearly is all but pennies, but I pity the fool who pays 15 dollars a month!

Is it possible to have a discussion on this forum without the pointless jabs? You hurt my feelings.
The real question here is, would you rather have some piece of crap service like Wi Fi or would you pay about 4 bucks a month to play on the best online avalible today

Microsoft puts alot of money into Live and they can't just pull that money out of no where...
so if it where free we probably wouldn't have the great service we have today

Exactly my point. Apart from "they can't just pull that money out of no where...". Haha, yes they can. Ever heard of Bill Gates? Wink

True, but they can't really pull it without losing profits...
and didn't he retire or somthing? hahaha

If you want the perfect example of an online service that is free? Just look at steam! They did it, Sony's doing it, how can Microsoft continue to Justify a fee for Gold? What can Microsoft invent to give Gold back it's luster?

Whatever path Live may take, more and more gamers will pause and question why.

[Edit]

Competition is a good thing, as we all benefit from it. I'm looking forward to PSN and Xbox Live getting into a cockfight over these things, however Steam really has no competition being PC-Based (and in my personal opinion, should be followed by example).
So what your saying is people should stop buying Live because it costs around $4 a month just because PSN is free? All I can see is Live becoming more and more popular.
What I'm saying, is just justify why, beyond the simple answer of "It's their service, they can charge if they like." I'm asking for your thoughts.

Steam offers stat tracking and scoreboards free of charge, digital distribution, patching, all of that jazz. PC games often have dedicated servers rather than P2P, which results in less lag. Steam offers game demos and trailers for download. Voice chat clients, friends list and in-game IM'ing to a seamless degree. The only thing steam doesn't offer, is being able to download television/movies (in my opinion a pointless service anyhow) which may very well be the reason why Xbox Live still sports a price tag.

PSN, I honestly cannot comment on because I have never used it beyond screwing around on Warhawk at a friend's house.
I heard that PSN is pretty good for being free but that its just really scarce...

kinda like there are plenty of nice features just not very many things/people/ products in that feature...

like i heard Home was nice but unless you have 20 friends with PS3's its kinda boering
Steam wins.

'nuff said.

The great thing about PCs?

you can download more apps.

get itunes or something if you want TV downloads :3

Lets not forget, that the PSN's free service also offers dedicated servers with no lag.

yeah, no users = no lag,

xbl has 10mill + subscribers world wide, granted they're probably not all on line at the same time, but still, i'd expect a little hicup now and again.

I don't see the problem with paying for Xbox Live. If I had a 360 I'd be more than willing to pay £40 for a year. It only works out as about £3 - £4 a month; and that's nothing really. Think about how much you play your 360 aswell. £40 is SO worth it for a year.
i would love for XBL to be free, XBL silver is meh, gold is amazing and once you get Diamond, thats the holy grail.
I don't even know whats on Diamond
microsoft sucks, thats y

OMG GUYS STEAM IS AMAZING....

Oh wait a minute i just wasted 5 grand on a pc that can properly run the games Steam supports.. Oh and my $80 a month T3 connection...  **** some fagggot sent me a virus need to take my pc in for repairs another 100 bucksgone.... WHAT THEY MADE IT SO I GOTTA PAY MONTHLY FOR THESE GAMES NOW... **** I SHOULDA GOT A 360..

yea have fun with steam... You can't compare something thats on PC to a console of course it will be better.

As for PSN your right it's free.. And well you get what you pay for a i guess.. Small community no decent features between friends IE Private chat while playing different games send messeges to all friends.. Hmm you wasted 60 bucks on a decent bluetooth headset? What a shame i got mine with my 360.

360 has adverts? No wai... If your talking about the 1 advert that is usually related to gaming which is usually interesting on the dashboard then wow.. I also heard some games have ingame billboards with ads.. OK big deal they got realistic instead of having some retarded made up company on the billboard.. Sorry Sony didn't have an original idea..

Oh damn thats right whens the last time Sony actually came up with something original..

"Look guys N64 has rumble lets copy them..."
"Look guys nintendo is making motion sensing lets tack some garbage on to say we have it to"
"Well since we cant make games for **** lets port all the good 360 games to our system so our fanboys have something to play."

I could go on..

10 cents a day is not to much for me to pay for XBL...
heres the answer, to your why question badwrong:

becuase they can.

"why make money when you can loose money?" is baisically what your asking.
Microsoft just has no need to make it free. the Xbox Live continues to grow steadily, so what would be the point of making it free? its apparent that people don't mind paying the money, and the extra money that MS gets from it will only help make XBL better.

so the same thing could be said about the Wii, why doesn't it get a price cut? I mean Nintendo is profiting from it, and Sony isn't profiting on their playstation 3 (I don't think, at least not ver much) so why should Nintendo get to profit? because getting a price cut would be pointless, sales are still at maximum, and the only reason for a price cut is if sales started falling. so until Microsoft starts losing subscribers and needs them back, then perhaps they will lower the price or make xbox live free.
