We don't normally like to get into the game of pointing fingers, but we were alerted to an interesting tip regarding the infamous "comparison videos" used by website GameTrailers. They're a good site and we respect them. They put up new video content promptly, and [insert more compliments here]. However. A lot of debate is going on currently over their comparison videos which are being touted as heavily biased against the PS3.
Straight from GameTrailer's mouth regarding the videos: "We don't create these videos for the fanboys. That's not the point. We create them so that people who own both systems can be a little more informed on which version to buy. It's the fanboys that turn the comments section for these videos into a debacle. As for using RGB or adjusting the white levels on the PS3, that completely defeats the point of these videos. We play both systems on default settings with the same cabling. If we were to adjust the settings on the PS3 to make it look better then we'd be sacrificing the integrity of the video. It's not the other way around."
So what they're saying is that they aren't taking advantage of the PS3's full-HD capabilities. It's built for that. But they aren't using it that way in their videos. Either crank both up to their maximum potential or get out, we say. Feel free to leave your thoughts as well.

Personally I think they should use the best possible video output the systems can do. It's not fair to possibly restrict one systems visuals just so that the "comparison" can be using a lesser quality video output.
They should just use HDMI for both systems and crank each one up as high as it'll go.
This is crazy. If they want to compare which has better graphics for a particular game then they need to have them both running at their full potential.
Don't you change the RGB settings on your TV anyway?

No you just plug the Component cable into the Component input. Either way, these sites shouldn't be handicapping the PS3. A game for both systems should use HDMI and use the max settings.
Oh, my mistake. I thought that on high-end tv's you adjust the RGB thing to get the best picture possible.
Maybe some people do Ricky, but I know when I play the Wii or my Xbox, which both use Component cable, I just plug them in and play, and they've always looked great.
GameTrailers has posted a comparison video of Uncharted with Component vs HDMI
here (I don't know how to post GT videos directly into the thread; if someone can help me out that would be great).
To me it seems like the differences are nearly unnoticable.

Well, it would help if the video was encoded in 720p. Since that video is compressed to some odd 640x480, the differences in HD resolution WOULD be unnoticeable.

Ack, now I'm confused. When they do comparison videos are they using component cables? Where's the disadvantage coming from? :x
They don't really matter in the long run as most people with both systems will just buy whatever version has achievement points.

Yes I believe their using component cables for both systems. The problem that some see with that is the PS3 was made to use HDMI for the best picture quality.
Another problem is that the PS3's output is RGB Limited/Superwhite "off" by default. These simple setting changes can, and do, make a world of difference to eliminate the blurry/washed out look that "plagues" these comparison videos.

It may be a bit hard to see but when you watch the HD version of the clip you can see that the HDMI video actually gives a more realistic image of the character. Plus things aren't quite so drab.
I honestly don't think these videos are biased, even if they aren't changing the PS3's default settings or using HDMI. we have to remember that the average PS3 owner isn't an avid internet-goer, so they don't know much about all of the capabilities of the PS3 nor do they care much. So using default settings for both PS3 and 360 (I don't think they ever said they used a 360 using HDMI cables, however the 360 does come standard with components compared to PS3's composites, so obviously 360 will looks slightly better)
so yeah, they are correct about its the fanboys that are turning all this crap into stupid debates, seeing as they obviously want their system to be using the best equipment, settings, etc.
I disagree wenis. The PS3 was built around the use of HDMI the 360 wasn't. You cannot handicap one system in order to compare a game with another. If you do that then PS3 owners may look at a game and think it's not as good, but on the other hand, 360 owners might look at a comparison between RGB and think there 360 games is better than what it really is compared to the competition.
You have to think about it like this. Imagine comparing one system's video on a color TV and another on a black and white TV. Sure that example may be extreme but it gets the point across that we are making. It would be an unfair comparison. They could easily say that not everyone has a color TV as their argument but it still wouldn't be fair.
if the PS3 was built around HDMI, why dont any of the bundles come with an HDMI cable? why are all the HD setting on the PS3 turned off by default?
so youre saying that gv.com favors the 360?
i saw no difference with the uncharted comp. vs. hdmi vid that gluegun18 posted because like sc7 said, "Well, it would help if the video was encoded in 720p. Since that video is compressed to some odd 640x480, the differences in HD resolution WOULD be unnoticeable." anybody who noticed a difference in that vid, i say, could be considered biased for PS3.
I checked out uncharted comparison between PS3 RGB and PS3 HDMI, I could tell differences. The HDMI gave more realisitic lighting in environments and on characters. I'm guessing the PS3 doesn't come with HDMI the same reason the Xbox 360 doesn't have built in WIFI...it's just a cost savings.
zing-but-not-really. we're talking graphics. not internet connections here, but does using WiFi have any significant online advantages over wired?
