Long story short, there is a chance that your gamertag will spontaneously corrupt. There is no one to blame except Microsoft for this fault; known to happen after system updates or maintenance/processing of payments, this error will lock you out of xbox live and effectively cause you to lose all of your gamerscore/data if you attempt to delete and then recover your profile as the main troubleshooting page suggests for you to do.

I'm not the type to get pissed over lost progress - just gives me an excuse to replay. What did piss me off, was the lost DLC. Dealing with this nonsense a while back, what fun I had on the customer support line troubleshooting and then having to convince them to make up for their mistake by giving me reparations.

While they returned the payment for Live, they never did reimburse me for the lost DLC - and instead said "Just hope your gamertag fixes itself next time xbox live updates, that's all we can do."

...more and more I question why I pay for this supposed service.

Anyway, I was one of the few lucky ones who had their gamertag magically fix itself months later, but regardless there's no excuse for crap like this to occur. What's more, has anyone else noticed Xbox Live screwing up more and more lately? There's even a lawsuit going on against them because of the Christmas outage, and even in January hiccups occur (for me at least) regularly when I try to play online.

Thanks to the Lawsuit, Microsoft's being tight lipped about how their hamster died - other than "Oops."

In summation: disgruntled customer.
*crosses fingers that his xbox wont get deathed.

Wait a second..this has happened a month too 7 months or so ago. Oldish?
This isn't the hardware failure of the RROD I'm talking about. I'm talking about random ass service failure. The latest post of that seven page topic was close to January, so it hasn't been rooted out yet.

[Edit]

If someone out there does have to suffer through this random ass glitch, DO NOT REFORMAT YOUR HARDDRIVE. Just leave it be and hope your gamertag fixes itself in a few months like mine did, try recovering it every week until it finally does.
Atleast you got your Gamertag back, I suppose.
I doubt that I will get it..but who knows.
it's 7 pages of the same handful of people complaining. if you weed out the bullshit, the number of people with issues is quite low. it sucks that it's happening at all, but nothing's perfect.

i've got a question about account recovery:
lets say you start with a fresh HDD and you want to recover your GT on there. when you do, do you also get back your game saves and everything you had downloaded into the previous HDD? i keep getting mixed answers and i figure i'd ask you since youve done it.

one more question: why are you still paying for this service if it's obvious you arent content with it?

x2

and microsoft is not being tightlipped "thanks to this lawsuit" the lawsuit is and always was garbage microsoft probably doesnt even know about such a petty lawsuit that will roll over and kill itself, and if it does, is happy for all the extra free publicity LOL. honestly that lawsuit is trash, i dont know why people think its so mighty i hear about it all the time in every forum and the funny thing is there are people that actually think microsoft will loose. lolololololololololol that **** makes me laugh so hard.

Yeah I'd tried recovery on another friend's console and it didn't work. The Xbox Rep also tried recovery on their console (I had to give them my hotmail and password, etc.) and ditto for them. It was a screwup entirely on their end, and trust me I went through so many troubleshooting steps to determine this that it's a wonder I didn't go insane.

[Edit]

Would it make you happy if you knew I'd canceled my yearly renewal plan? Don't be an ass.
im not being an ass im just saying like ive said from day 1 the lawsuit is garbage. i think it was on kotaku but they already found that the lawsuit was in direct contradiction with what we all agreed in in the terms of use therefore lawsuit = garbage, IMHO if microsoft (or any other company) gets caught by such little things, they arent doing theyre job right.
I know your lieing microsoft would NEVER ask you for personal login information.
This wasn't a Joe-Public operator that asked for my information; this was a supervisor. The supervisor thought I was lying, and this is how I proved my account was actually corrupt at the time.

There's nothing wrong with being a doubting Thomas, but in this case you can't argue with the evidence of the forum links and my own posts buried within the damned thing.

[Edit]

Seems the latest post was Jan. 22nd, 2008, so this nonsense is still hasn't been resolved for a number of unlucky people out there.
