$299.99 USD for a Playstation 3 looks like a steal. Rumors are floating around that this is becoming reality, and before the end of January 2008. Is it possible?

We contacted some of our insiders to get the latest scoop on this rumor and see if it had any fact behind it. We were skeptical, after all the PS3 just received a price-cut in November.

The Playstation 3 IS in fact getting a price-cut. A new model, will retail at $299.99 USD, the announcement will be made January 28, 2008, and the new price will take effect Friday February 29, 2008. There are two main reasons as to why the Playstation 3 is getting this price-cut.

Reason 1: The playstation 3 production costs have decreased tremendously over the past couple of months. What used to cost $800, now cost less than $400.

Reason 2: Time Warner. In exchange for Time Warner's exclusitivity (and an end to the format war), Sony has promised to reduce the price of the Playstation 3. As many of you know the Playstation 3 is equipped with a blu-ray disk drive, and the more the Ps3 sells, the greater the chance of Blu-Ray's success.

We are very excited to bring you these news today.

first i'll say ive never heard of that website nor does it looks like a reliable source for information, but what do you think about this info at least? there was just a price cut in november, do you think a new one will come already? and what would you think would be lacking in this console?

my guess would be no wifi, maybe a wired controller, even smaller harddrive.

That is friggin' awesome! I'm gettin' me a PS3 next year!
Does the newest model have backwards compatibility? Sony's been spotty on that for a while now.

Low end models: None.
60 GB: Full.
80 GB: Depends on the game.
Newer, low cost model: ???
I haven't heard of this site either, and after looking at a "home page" I only saw two bits of information. I wonder if they're new and trying to get traffic. If it's true than it's a rather amazing development. Let's keep on this info and see if we can't find any other info around the web about it. Either to prove it true or false.
If its true, I might be getting myself a PS3.
I plan on picking mine up either Wed or Thurs. but if we can get some confirmation that this is true before then I'll just wait...I'm still leary of trusting an obscure site.
If true, This christmas will be PSWII60! :d
Uh, Wi-fi will still be in, most likely at least a 40 gig HDD, definitely no wired controller (the current ones still work via bluetooth when plugged in), plus wired sixaxis would be hard, and since Sony has had this from day one...

Of course there will be no BC, and probably a 65nm RSX.

For the 80 gig BC, I can assure most people, that almost every game plays, and about 8-10% only have minor issues that don't hinder gameplay.
i call shenanigans, i dont see a price cut for a while
how many watts is your 80gb's power supply sc7? I ask because I think the 40gb models already have the 65nm RSX in them.
lol. blogspot is a site for people to... blog, but an announcement of a price drop in Feb. (at GDC) could be plausible.

I'm not sure how to tell, since it's internal. I can guarantee it's the same as the 60 and 20, because the current 80 gig mobo still is the 1.0a revision (Cell+RSX+Standard PS2 GS). When they removed the GS, they changed the mobo, and I know it had the 65nm Cell, but I'm uncertain on the size of the RSX.

Like I said, I'm sure it's the same 300 something watts as the 20 and 60.

I think you should be able to look somewhere on your PS3 box and find it's wattage. From what I've ready on other sites, the 40gb PS3 uses 135watts compared to 200watts the other SKUs use. The 65nm cell processor really allowed for a cut in watts used.

Well, it would be nice if this were true but I wouldn't hold my breath. February is just around the corner so we'll know soon enough. Strange how none of the "bigger" sites have this info up. I'm with gft on this one because it does sound like someone trying to get traffic to their site.

No way will the PS3 ever be £150 here...

America gets price drop and to counter that EU gets price raise!

yay EU

This is what I'm going to do. I'm gonna pay a little extra for the warranty at Best Buy, that way I can get there 30 day Store Price Guarantee so that if the 40gb model does drop to $299 I can get the difference plus 10%.

I just read that the people who have been talking about this price drop is the folks at SlickDeals.net and they've broken PS3 and Xbox 360 price drops before.

I should start saveing up for one after I buy my next Wii game, which will be in the next week.
