the gameboy pocket came out in 1996
the gameboy color came out in 1998
the gameboy advance came out in 2001
the nintendo DS came out in late 2004

the time between the releases of the past handheld devices from nintendo has been about 2-3 years, and its been a little over 3 since the DS came out, so do you think Nintendo might start releasing some information about a new handheld soon?
"so do you think Nintendo might start releasing some information about a new handheld soon? "

Simple answer= no.

DS is selling better than ever.
No way, that would just be so stupid. Most people wouldn't want to buy another handheld.
maybe a DS Superlite but no new handheld
Personally i cant wait for the next handheld because i just skipped the DS completely, but i know that Nintendo wont be releasing a new handheld for quite some time.
yer missin out...its awesome,
Honestly i have thought about getting one in the past but i just dont see why. I mean now i feel like its to late in the run to get it and then have to get there next one soon after.

Exactly. It's STILL hard to get hold of a DS in some shops. When I was in Gamestation the other day somebody asked to buy one and there wasn't any in stock. The DS sales are climbing all the time, even after 3 years of it being released; which I think is pretty impressive. So really, there is no need for Nintendo to even think about releasing a new handheld anytime soon.

Nintendo will release a new handheld once the DS stops selling so well. Once everyone in the world has a DS, then Nintendo will wait about 2years and release a new handheld that is even better.
"I was just talking about this with my local GameStop employee. The DS is selling like crazy, and it is actually really hard to find now. The store I got to has a waiting list for people that want a DS, and GameStop has been hearing bad things about supplies. They may not be getting any in for over a month! I guess Nintendo was too busy worrying about Wii supply to keep things up with the DS! As you can see in the charts above, people are willing to pay more for a DS now than they were awhile back. Supply and demand at work again!"

That quote just about sums up the DS at the moment.

I think Nintendo will go through all the possible colours first, lol. Since the recently announced DS Lite Cobalt Blue/Black has been confirmed.

So thats going to be quite a wait from now.

so was the gameboy advance, it sold a total of 80 million during its span. also the gameboy micro wasn't released too long before the DS came out.

The Micro was just some lame excuse for another GBA.

That Cobalt DS is sexy, although not quite on par with the gold Zelda DS. I don't see Nintendo releasing a new handheld until at least late 2009. If DS sales continue like they are now they could even go into 2010, still riding on the DS. Their hand could get forced at some point if Sony decides to release the PSP2 some time this year or the next.
For everyone saying that the DS is selling so well that they won't move on, that's wrong. The DS is roughly selling on par with the GBA and GB for the same amount of time.

What's most likely to happen is that sales will suddenly start to sharply drop, and Nintendo will reveal the new hand held they already have in the works. The current strategy works with the DS and Wii having abstract control schemes, but the fact that Nintendo hasn't done much to make the DS more integral with operations of the Wii make my likely to suspect they're on the way out with it.

I have a few more points to make, but I'm actually going to pick up a PSP and 2 gig memory stick at CC for $200. I'll finish my post later.
I HIGHLY doubt it, not just because of the great sales, but because of all the new technology they'd have to (and want to) put in this "new handheld". Its just to soon. Maybe in another 3-5 years.

i think 5 years would be stretching it a bit dude..

and remember guys Im just talking about when they will release information about it, not the actual system itself. the Wii was introduced over a year before it came out right? as the revolution that is. so obviously the new handheld won't be out anytime soon, but information on it, maybe some pictures or something should (my guess)

I'm going with Kindrik and saying late 2009. Possibly 2010, we'll get our first dose of information about the next DS.

The DS current game list for 2008 is quite impressive and should hold the crowd over so I doubt any need to realese info this year is out.

Not to get all over the PSP here, but the PSP has technology that is leaps and bounds past the 33 and 66 MHz ARM Processors in the DS. It's very likely that they could use something like an Intel XScale and get a 600 MHz processor in a handheld, no problem whatsoever.

but the DS is FUN and has LOADS of fun games, more than enough out already and more great games coming out every month,

the PSP has playstation ports...yawn
