I recently was the victim of fraud when a person of unknown origins obtained my Windows Live password and then used it to purchase large amounts of XBOX Live points with my accounts stored credit and debit cards.

How did they obtain my password? Why, from Microsoft, of course!

Thats right! All they have to do is call up customer service and badger 'em with enough fake excuses for long enough, to get your password, or a new one. Then they can wreak havoc! And apparantly Microsoft doesnt care, as they've done nothing to try and prevent it.

Theres nothing that can prevent this. Now, if I hadnt stored my credit/debit cards, this PARTICULAR type of theft would not have happened...but heres the most alarming part: the fact still remains that they were able to freely obtain my password.

So my suggestion to you is, if you value your privacy and your private correspondence, simply do not at all use MSN. I'm already trying to figure out a way to erase my hotmail, even though I have so many website memberships tied to it.

I know many of you probably do not use it anyway, but my warning remains the same.
Or just do not have any info such as credit/debit cards stored. if you do like [meh] erase them NAO.
And how do u know he gt the password from Microsoft? He probabaly just hacked in or sumthin? Or you don't have good Spyware Protection
I'm using a fake MSN Anyway.

You people obviously cant read. THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE IS THIS: THEY CAN GET YOUR PASSWORD BY SIMPLY CALLING UP CUSTOMER SERVICE AND BADGERING THEM FOR IT. He didnt HAVE to hack me and I KNOW he didnt because I DO have good protection.

WOW THAT WAS PRODUCTIVE. I ADMITTED AS MUCH THAT YOU SHOULD TAKE THE CREDIT CARD INFO OFF.

The POINT is that if you value your privacy at all, to not use MSN, if its THAT EASY to get someone's password!

Badgering?

Yes, simply calling up and going on about a bunch of bullshit about how you cant get into your account, and do it enough and they'll give you a password or a new one! Thats how they did this to me! Look it up: Im not the first person this has happened to!

Did you have beef with someone for them to do this to you?

None whatsoever. My bf has heard this from his Microsoft friends (he works for square enix, we live in Redmond, WA) and found accounts of it online from guys doing this in the spirit of revenge. They very stupidly revealed their methods online, and its spread like wildfire.

Oh I see..

Well they can't charge you, for something you haven't done. Cant they trace the place thats buying all of this stuff?

You'd think so. Who knows. I have to fight this hard, because if I dont its 240 bucks in overcharges, plus all the money I got gipped for. Over 800 dollars. It has to be proved that I didnt use the points, and no they're not on my account but they were purchased as "gift" points....

Yes, and that IS allowed here, and while it may be a little rude, I find it a little rude to make a response when you so obviously have not read what I wrote.

I don't have anything debit or credit related to my msn. Only social.

Don't have x box either. Sad to here this and pathetic on microsofts end.

I don't have much to worry about. Toungue

what i dont get is: whoever did this has to at least know your full name. i seriously cant believe they would just give out personal info to anyone who pesters them long enough. you'd also think they'd ask for more info like your address and phone number to verify they are talking to that person. it's still a scary thought and im def. pulling all my CC info off of my MSN account.

i did read your issue. all of it. i didnt make that response to be sacastic at all, actually i was quite serious. maybe i worded it wrong, and you took it to offense. i use my debit card all the time on XBL so i found this issue close to home, because if it can happen to you, it could happen to any of us.

I was just saying that we should take off our debits/credit cards from our accounts to prevent this from happening to any one else. that was all.

Yeah i wasn't being sarcastic either, i was pretty serious!

The funny thing is, I don't care if someone gets my password, there is so much spam and sh*t I get in my e-mail, they'd probobly get a virus XD.
And besides, I don't ever talk to anyone on MSN anyways and I don't have any Credit/debit cards, well, exept for my TD Canada Trust Accesess card.
Yea, I almost opened an e-mail that had a BIG virus in it, the kind of virus that gets into your computer and deletes the programs that help your computer actually run in the first place, I hope the hackers get that kind.
