IGN recently tested the online battle feature in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Their battle took place between San Francisco and Los Angeles. They also didn't use the high speed connection surely that is avaliable to the Japanese Nintendo offices. They are happy to report that it was completely and utterly lag free.
Still, we're very happy to report that our two-on-two experience perfectly mimicked Nintendo's own – in other words, one-hundred percent lag free and two-hundred percent awesome.
So 500 miles has lag free matches without the need for high speed internet. Good news for all those afraid of lag in their online battles.

What speed does "high speed" entail these days?
Its too early to get confident. We still need to test across ocean Wi-Fi.
Alright now trying facing a Japanese person plz.
Yes IGN Japan vs IGN America , that's the real test.
If Sakurai released a video of U.S vs Japan wifi match on Smashbros.com and its lag free then I would consider that a REALLY good update.

That would be damn near the best update there if it were to happen.
Ya, im pretty happy about this but not entirely sure yet.

They couldn't do it. They tried but couldn't get in on a game but they believe that maybe Nintendo is locking people outside of Japan who'd imported because they were able to go into the spectator mode thing and watch Japanese people play.[/runonsentance]
What would be their reasoning behind that?

lol. is there a IGN JP?
What would be their reasoning behind that?
just cause it's not what they had planned. they've been cracing down on importing, so this isnt surprising
What would be their reasoning behind that?
To stop importers from the full experience of the game until the NA date.

Believe it or not there is.
So... I guess this didn't exactly happen the way they said it would, huh?
Well they are IGN, they have top of the line internet connection and were probably facing another IGN office with that same high quality connection. Not everyone in NA has a high quality connection like IGN and other review sites.
I have a VERY VERY good high speed internet connection in my house, so it's defiantly not me when it's lagging, but surprisingly, I haven't had any random online matches lag for a while.

Nice dig up Joker as I had forgotten about this. I guess it was running smooth when just a handful of people were testing it out. I still don't see how they played it lagfree on slower connections when I can't even connect when I use high speed and can't even connect.
I had like 6 random matches today without any lag, one person dropped out and another person came in and brought lag with them D:
I've had only one lag match since I've had brawl, and I played like 15 matches.
