This has been coming for awhile now, but its still too bad, I have some great memories in arcades. It will be a sad day when they are all gone.
The time and money I spent on Dragon's Lair alone...jeez.
Arcade firm stung by success of Nintendo Wii
TOKYO, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Shares in Japanese toy and amusement arcade firm Namco Bandai Holdings (7832.T: Quote, Profile, Research) fell for a second day on Thursday after it issued a shock downward revision to its earnings outlook and said it would close 50 to 60 arcades, about one-fifth of the total.
"A lot of the types of games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home," company spokesman Yuji Machida said.
The move reflects the popularity of Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) hot-selling Wii game console

I suppose that's the way it goes. They should incorporate Wii's into arcades. Then again, they will probably get stolen...
yeah I don't think there are any arcades left in my city at all.
I don't think Nintendo or the Wii is to blame for this. Arcades have been on the decline for a long time now. It is very strange though how people are crazy about arcades over here. They're everywhere and always packed. The sad thing is that the games in them are ancient. I'm talking Marvel vs Capcom 1, all of the King of Fighters including the first one, House of the Dead 2, Fatal Fury series, Samurai Showdown series, etc... People are still playing those games after all these years and I see them go in, sit down and play the game and complete it and then turn around and start again to beat it again using the same character(s)...
Phht, who cares? I've never been in an arcade in my life anyways.
then just stay out of this thread, why so negative
ahh man, I used to love arcades.
then they all disappeared >_<

Arcades have been declining since the dawn of home consoles.
Why would the Wii be to blame? The VC only has console games (unless I missed something). The only way a game would come from the arcade to the Wii would be if the game was ported from the arcade to a console and then to the VC. MBX and noodleboy are right. Arcades have been declining for years ever since you could get the same quality of gaming on a home console as the cabinet. The arcades I visit (the couple that are still around) are basically filled with shooters and those games with the board on the bottom you use to mvoe, like skateboarding, snowboarding, wave surfing, etc, which makes sense since you still can't get quite the same quality at home for those types of games. Yes shooters are on consoles, and done better than the past on the Wii, but it's still not quite the same, especially those games with the giant two-foot cannon of a gun with a massive recoil.
If arcades want to keep up with the times, they need to do something new instead of trying to rely on the same song and dance.
How has the Wii ridden the country of arcades and arcade games? They have been declining for years, since the PS2 came out. It was bound to happen once a bunch of consoles came out successfully.
Although, a new Street Fighter is coming out which is cool...I probably will never play it though

Pun intended *cough*a la DDR?*cough*

Arcades have been declining since well before the PS2, young grasshopper. They've been going down since the first generation, AKA the Magnavox Odyssey.

lol. Actually that pun wasn't intended, but it is true. DDR is the best thing in arcades next to shooters and air-hockey, both of which have been around for years. Sure it's fun to go to an arcade once or twice a year and play air-hockey or shoot the terrorists in whatever is the newest shooter, but that's not nearly enough to keep people going enough to make a decent revenue off it.
Air hockey for the win!!
yes!!!
Living in a town packed with arcades, I just wish they would die...

Man, when I was like 8 years old I remember playing Rampage and Captain America at the local arcade...I'm not that young.
yeah i grew up in blackpool too,
driving down the prom last weekend i couldn't help but notice
all the games in the same or similar spots to when i last went in.
atleast 8 years ago, i think i'll have a wander through mr bee's and coral island
see if there are anything new in there.

I <3 the Magnavox Odyssey line. The Odyssey^2 was awesome, and took my video game virginity all those years ago...
