Wonder what they will call it: The iplay? hmmm, I can see us purchasing all our games from itunes with some version of DRM.

Two things are for certain: it will be the prettiest and most expensive handheld gaming device out there.

There have been rumors going around that Apple is planning to delve into the video game market even further by coming up with its own platform, either in the form of a console or a handheld device.

Apple, even up to now, has remained mum on the matter but it seems that the rumors have a basis after all. One search at the database of Trademark Applications and Registrations Retrieval website will yield a patent dated February 5, 2008.

The said patent tells of new "goods and services" that are describe as the following:
Toys, games and playthings, namely, handheld units for playing electronic games
Handheld units for playing video games
Stand alone video game machines
Electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only
LCD game machines
Electronic educational game machines
Toys, namely battery-powered computer games
Given the success of mobile gadgets iPhone and iPod Touch, it seems that a portable gaming device from Apple is going to be a sure hit among its loyal fans. While the company has yet to give an official comment, Sony and Nintendo better look after their market as early as now.

well, seeing how all of Apple's products are expensive as hell, and expensive video game systems don't sell well (see: PS3 at launch), then I doubt its a success. then again, Apple does has a pretty loyal fanboy-base.
Another NGage/Gizmondo? -_-
Be careful of anything that sounds like this when we're less than 2 weeks away from April Fool's Day. I remember last year people were doing stuff a month in advance. Also EGM has done the Apple portable gaming device prank before. I hate this time of year as I can't believe anything I read.
Remember WiiHD and Google TiSP?

Eh? We're not even in march yet!

Just remember all of the stuff we've heard before from patent ideas, like the Nintendo Phone that never surfaced. Until they come out with it, this is nothing more than protecting their options and ideas.

I know. It's both sad and crazy that you have to start watching out for this stuff this early in advance. This could be just a setup for it though. They say rumor now and then after a while a small update to it and then when it gets close they could say "Confirmed! Apples releases official info on iGame and it will hit stores in time for Christmas this year!

but its still valid to report on it in my opinion, its news, but needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as does most of the internets now that i think of it
Exactly. I'm not saying it's bad reporting it, just telling what I think about it.

oh, and here is a link to the old prank from EGM back in 06.

EGM Apple Handheld April Fool's Prank
oh i know my reporting is never bad Smile

less likely a prank than just a protection of R & D, im guessing
mana we are 1 month and 2 weeks away from april fools, not just 2 weeks away lol..
Ahhh, I see many of you forget just how crazy people can be. Last year there were pranks well over 4 weeks/month in advance. Many magazines are printed one month in advance as well. This may very well turn out to be true but I'll believe it when I see it. I doubt they're making any handheld gaming device. They may announce "official" games downloadable via iTunes for the iPhone and iTouch but I wouldn't put it much past that.
The Apple gaming portable has been rumored for a long time now.
Well, They already have had most of those patents for a long while.
Anyone remember the Pippin?
Nope, didn't think so.

Ths concludes why Apple will not go into gaming.
Then again, people seem to be jumping on anything with an "i" in front of it now.
