Full Version: PS2 backwards compatibility not dead yet

Gamers disappointed with the PS3's backwards compatibility (or the lack thereof) might find interest in reading the latest issue of EGM. In the mag, an interview with SCEA senior marketing VP Peter Dille and director of PSN operations Eric Lempel hints that PS2 backwards compatibility isn't completely down and out.

When asked about the lack of bc support possibly crossing out chances of ever having downloadable PS2 games via the PSN, Lempel answered back with "there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that happen." Lempel refused to talk about any specific plans, but hasn't flat-out denied that it isn't something being worked on.

On another note, Peter Dille states that PS2 backwards compatibility is still important to Sony. He reconfirms what we already know, that the removal of PS2 backwards compatibility helped lower the overall price of the PS3. However, consider the fact that Sony has cut production costs for the PS3 by half, and then the reason not to have "expensive" emulated bc seems a little moot. If Sony does decide to support downloadable PS2 games playable through emulation, it's very very possible that the software emulation could also play that precious PS2 disc collection of yours.

good news for those who want BC in their PS3. I guess this is a ray of hope.
Cool. Though when I get a PS3 I'm still gonna try and get a 60GB via ebay Toungue
I got my 60gb at work used. It works great! I like the idea of being able to play my wonderful RPGs from the ps2 era without having to have a ps2 present. However, I find myself using my ps3 mostly for movies vs games. The DS and Wii have more games that appeal to me at the present time.
So wait, downloadable PS2 games? I'd need to pay for them again? Forget that. I'd rather keep my PS2 hooked up as its cheaper.

Isn't that what Wii owners do with VC?

Actually a lot of Wii owners never got to play some of these classic games or they're too old for to actual track down even if they have the system. It isn't the same as the PS2 which you can still walk into to pretty much any store and purchase it and a lot of the best games that already came out.
Ya, and I don't even have an N64 or NES, and i'm not about to buy one.

It is. However I refuse to buy N64 games as I pretty much have working copies of them already and a 64 that can still play them. Much like I have a working PS2 and all the games I want on PS2 I have working copies of.

Furthermore it would have just been cheaper us as gamers in the long run to leave backwards compatibility in the PS3. Now they can charge us money per game instead of just a little bit extra for eternal backwards compatibility.

Cheaper for us gamers..maybe, but for those of us who aren't bothered with having BC, then I'd rather buy a cheaper system that doesn't have that, plus doesn't have all the memory card readers I'd never use.

For the price people save between the BC systems and the Non-BC systems, they could buy a slim PS2 and have a ball. I guess it's all a matter of choice and opinion.

I'm ok with not being able to play PS2 games on my PS3. I sold my PS2 with all the games already anyhow and don't play on buying and downloading them to play them on my PS3. It's nice to have options though but I'm still glad I got the 40gb model, which is cheaper and I already have my small 80gb external hdd being used with it as well.
I find it easier to have them in one console rather than hooking up various ones.

If I had to swap between Wii and GCN every time I played games boy would I be rather annoyed. Since I often jump between the two platforms having them both in one is very convenient.

Unless Sony can make a way for them to tell if you've bought a game already so you can get it again for free off their online store then I think I'll stick to my PS2. Which would in turn get much more playtime than my future PS3... until the long lifespan games like FF-XIII and KH3 come out.
