Do you guys know of any
free programs that are good for editing and creating songs and such. I need something that'll allow me to have different layers of sound going at the same time, like overlapping tracks palying sort of thing.
Help?

Audacity. that's your best FREE bet.
If your serious though, I'd 'invest' in Cubase for that kind of thing.
I much prefer Ableton Live, but that's a little more difficult to use for what you want by the sounds of things.
A good pair with Live is Propellerhead Reason, but It's nowhere near as useful unless you have a MIDI keyboard.
Other popular choices are Fruity Loops/FL Studio, Sony ACID and Adobe Soundbooth/Audition
Hmm, so is it just like Audacity.com?
Do you have any links for this stuff? Thanks too.

Just Google it. I have it. Absolute junk to be honest. I connect up my guitar and it sounds quite bland. Effects are crap too

I don't care about effects, and I have my own method of recording. I just want a program that'll allow me to play a song in layers.

Garageband would be perfect, but you need a Mac with iLife.
Yeah...and that I don't have nor want.
Looks like I'll just have to stick to single recordings. Ah well. :l

I have a MIDI keyboard, what's this?
Reason is the ultimate software synth
It is highly acclaimed as being an essential tool for anyone with a midi keyboard
Seriously some of the instruments it comes with actually sound real, and then you can add effects to distort/compress/whatever the sound so it suits what you're doing.
Ableton's great for drums and stuff, so I use the rewire functions to route Reason through into ableton so I've got the ultimate synth with the ultimate drums and percussion, I usually put vocals into ableton for ease, but it's just as good to put it into reason.
