There's a reason that Microsoft issued a preemptive damage control statement earlier today about its current supply issues with the Xbox 360—the console is sitting at the bottom of the NPD Group's January 2008 sales charts with an atypically low 230,000 units sold in the United States. We wouldn't be at all surprised if Nintendo chalks up less than mind-blowing sales of the Wii and Nintendo DS to similar supply problems later tonight. The post-holiday race looks pretty much like a dead heat.

Wii - 274,000
PlayStation 3 - 269,000
Nintendo DS - 251,000
PlayStation Portable - 230,000
Xbox 360 - 230,000
But lets give it up for the PlayStation 3. As I predicted in last week's episode of GameTrailers TV, the console outsold Microsoft's box last month, which makes me pretty much the smartest person in the room. Curiously though, no PlayStation 2 hardware numbers were provided by the NPD Group, and we hope to get the data from Sony themselves when they gloat.

Well, weigh in everybody!

P.S. for those who don't understand the Howard Stringer picture, it's what Sony Defense Force posts after every NPD article.
Well it's been almost an hour and no one but sc7 and myself have commented? usually when hardware sales are shown in the Wii section people jump all over them. Anyway...good job Sony and hopefully we'll see more month of good sales. Do I expect every month to be like this...no, but I do see a trend that will show more and more PS3's being sold in 2008.
Well pretty much everyone already owns a DS so there's no reason that the PS3 shouldn't outsell it. But it's good to see Sony finally getting some sales above the competition.

Now we need to see some good games on the PS3...
watch out MS, here comes sony

drop the ps3 another 50 bucks and i think they will have hit the sweet spot

they obviously have better production facilities and more units warehoused, so i can see the ps3 one day eclipsing the wii...for about a month
Lol, I guess someone forgot the site was called "WiiLoaded".

Anyway, that's pretty weird because when I saw the "outsells DS" I automatically assumed it sold more than the Wii, but it seems that the Wii finally outstretched it's little brother system, and more shockingly the PS3 did as well. Party hats for Sony I guess. :p

edit

That's a very creepy picture.
Congrats Wii for beating DS for once.
Congats to the PS3 and I hope they can keep it up. It might just be for January so we'll have to wait and see.

You tend to remind us of that a lot Ricky. I'd think by now you'd know it's "wiiloaded". Oh well, you tried to be clever, maybe next you will be. One other thing, this is "Other Systems/Sony Consoles" in case you get lost again Smile

I think with the latest announcement of the cell processor getting even smaller, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a PS3 at $299 this year. Nope I didn't pull that out of thin air, a number of analyst think so too, and that would be really quite amazing.

hmmm, and i should be getting a tidy little tax rebate as well...what a coincidence

hey gft, do you know if the bluray player plays divx and avi files?
Congrats PS3, congrats on beating the DS one month. Lets see if you can do it again xD
Look at the authors of the posts in the Sony section.. not exactly a wide variety. This simply isn't the most popular section of the board.

I know the latest update allows you to play divx files, but I'm not sure about AVI.  I'll get back to you on that.

UPDATE:

I just read on yahoo answers that AVI files are now supported by the PS3. If anyone can find the complete specs for the video codecs and such, please post them, and if I find the latest updated ones I'll do the same.

You can definitely play both file formats on the PS3 because I have been doing so. I have a lot of movies in both DivX and AVI format and I back them up to DVD-Rs and they play just fine on my PS3.
backups, yeah backups, that what i have too Smile

Maybe I should have worded it like that instead.

Please keep your insulting remarks to yourself, no one even made an attack at you. :p
Try being less hostile from now on. It works wonders. Big Grin

That's exactly the point I was trying to make. Smile

Back to the thread, it doesn't seem too far off that the PS3 will outsell the Wii come the time MGS4 is released. It might even gain a foothold into 1st/2nd place when FFXIII is out, especially if it receives another price drop.

oh come on, its never going outsell the wii in total sales...i mean the Wii has yet to be in plentiful supply and its approaching 18 months after launch

there just arent that many hardcore guys left out there

with all the huge launch mistakes sony made, they lost way too many gamers to 360 and wii to get them back

They've lost very few to the 360 worldwide, save for America. In America, those they lost to the 360 is still only a fraction of the total PS2 owners.

As for the Wii. Some of it's sales are impulse moves because it is so hard to find. Still the PS3 may outsell the Wii, not saying that it will, but the Wii hype could VERY quickly die down, and everyone knows that, while the PS3 could have steady sales for a while, thanks to Blu-ray.

I dunno about Wii's hype dying down. It has the casual gamers that will splurge their money on any mini game pack. And it has its hardcore fans who will begrudgingly get it for Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and other future titles.

Sony will make up lost ground when the likes of MGS4, FF-XIII/VS-XIII and KH3 are eventually out. Until then I can foresee it maintaining steady sales.

Especially now HD-DVD is belly up.
it just needs to be a little bit cheaper. since Sony dropped the 80gb, if they happen to come out with a console with even less specs than the 40gb and manage to retail it for $299, I guarantee the PS3 will be outselling the others alot more often
