Very nice find Wenis...The war is official over.
yep id have to agree. I actually think I said the winner will be decided by which format walmart chooses..

*wenis' ego level just increased 1 level*

also, it is rumored that toshiba is giving up on HDDVD as well and are going to make a bluray player of their own: http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/14/tos...op-hd-dvd/
I read that piece too. I like to go to HD Digest and get that info. Walmart selling cheap Blu-ray players will bring a lot more people into the fold...I look forward to that.
Kind of glad everything is over but I was really hoping HD-DVD would've took it. I guess now I'll just join others in trying to hang on to regular DVDs as long as possible.
Get an HTPC with an NVIDIA 8 series graphics card, the upscaling capabilities are astonishing Wink
Yet another reason for me to buy a PS3. Makes me happy.

I'm perfectly happy with the DVD player I already have, thanks. :l

I'm just glad I hadn't jumped on either bandwagon yet. Now I won't feel so worried about buying Blu Ray movies. I still have tons of DVDs and I'll still be buying them for movies that I like but that I don't love.

LoL thats what im doin'! Big Grin

I look at it like this, today's films are more or less shot with the fact that they'll end up on HD media somewhat in the back of the mind. True, many later DVDs also were movies shot in a high definition analog media, that the original master is further quality than what BR holds, but here's my point.

My PS3 plays Blu-rays. It also upscales DVDs. Rather than pay to upgrade my collection (especially movies like Wedding Crashers, which doesn't benefit from HD), I will just buy new ones on Blu-ray, while my old ones look almost as good as a BR movie when upscaled to 1080p.
That's why I have a netflix subscription.  I can just "rent" the movies I already own in Blu-ray if I choose, and then when a good deal comes around for Blu-ray movies I might snatch it up...like Underworld Blu-ray for $11.99 Wink

Like DVD's, there are some Blu-ray movies that don't really give you that HD feel, so for those thinking about getting a Blu-ray player, or if you have one and thinking about picking up your favorite DVD movies in Blu-ray, go to http://www.dvdtalk.com and check out the reviews. That's why I picked up Underworld for $11.99, because it's suppose to be amazing on Blu-ray.
IT's True

Toshiba sends HD DVD to its Deathbead,

Well the movie studios are gonna feel this one, there's already a growing number of peeps boycotting disney and blue ray only supporters, looks like there gonna stop buying movies outright.

I would normally say that's a little extreme, but it actually a bit more like crazy. People are not going to stop buying movies because of this decision. Yes you have HD-DVD fans that are very upset, but they will still buy DVDs and use their players to upconvert them.

i remember this argument when DVDs came out, "i am just gonna get the really cool movies on DVD and other movies (rom coms, etc) i can get on VHS"

it didnt happen,

so either blu-ray becomes the new DVD or it this generations Laserdisc (technologically superior but nobody cares)

we'll see, at least it no longer has a 'betamax' to compete with Smile

I think Blu-ray is a lot more accessible to people, especially having a playing built into the PS3. I also remember going to different stores and seeing some of my favorite movies on dvd and being hugely expensive. The Bond movies and Star Trek movies come to mind and they were $30+ which I thought was ridiculous.

Blu-ray movies though have really come down in price, and you can buy a huge number of them for $19.99. Now for me, buying a movie like Close Encounters of the Third Kind for $29.99 and getting all 3 of the films movie releases on the disc is well worth the extra cash or buying something like Planet Earth for $54.99 is a steal.
Toshiba is also stepping away from HD so it's all crashing down now.
yeah, price is important, if blu-ray discs are sub $20 and it sounds like they are...thats an easy transition for dvd buyers

That's what they say, but a couple days ago they said that rumors of them dropping HD-DVD were also false, so I'd expect to see a Toshiba Blu Ray player in a month or two (if not sooner).

I'd suggest anyone who wants to see something interesting go to Amazon.com's HD-DVD forum and see what they HD-DVD fans are saying...they are literally going nuts over there.

I agree with what your saying drew102e. I think these technology companies have finally figured out that the consumer may pay a little more for a player, but they won't be screwed over when going to buy the movie they want. I've written this before, but one should also go to a stores online website when looking for Blu-ray movies because they're usually cheaper. Amazon.com is also a good place to check out for decent prices.

sucks that the inferior product won...again (vhs).
