August 9, 2006 - Neill Blomkamp will be making his feature film directing debut on the big-screen adaptation of Bungie's videogame sensation Halo.

The news was first reported by Xbox.com. The South Africa-born Blomkamp is one of the most sought-after and acclaimed directors in commercials and short films, including the hailed Alive in Joburg. Blomkamp has won Clios and a Visual Effects Society Award, and was nominated for an Emmy for his work on James Cameron's TV series Dark Angel.

"As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring Halo's premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide," said Halo exec producer Peter Jackson. "Fran [Walsh, Jackson's partner in WingNut Films] and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers, and we're delighted to be working again with our friends at Universal, and with our new ones at Fox and Microsoft. With Neill on board, I'm even more excited by the potential of this project."

IGN was advised by Carlo Trulli of Spy Films, one of the leading commercials production companies in the world, that Jackson sought out Blomkamp personally for the directing job. Jackson's Weta special effects houses will handle the visual effects for Halo. Blomkamp's profile at Spy can be found here, and you can watch some of his reel here.

Spy Entertainment's official bio of the filmmaker says "Blomkamp has harnessed the powers of technology, art and creativity to bring the world imagery never before possible. Garnering his exceptional CG skills in an intelligent and specific manner, his forte is creating pure photo-real visualizations of concepts that not only can't be photographed, but exists only in his imagination."

They add, "Recognizing that filmmaking is as organic as it is artificial; Neill has merged the two seamlessly, making a hybrid which feels unexpectedly authentic. He enjoys creating atmosphere in a spot where the concept is not only unique, but slightly bizarre."

Halo will be produced by Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel. Production is slated to commence in New Zealand for a summer 2008 release.

I read about this on Team Xbox, It seems a bit odd to have someone who has only really done adverts and short films. But then I'm sure bungie know what they're doing, they always do Toungue
I think the big issue will getting a "hollywood" type in there is that they'll totally screw it up. This is halo...you want some cool one-liners and a lot of action. We don't need an added love interest, a dying mother on another planet, or a rabid case of herpes to deal with.

I like the idea of a fresh face doing the movie Smile

Yesterday's news that Neill Blomkamp (yeah, we said "who the..." too, don't feel bad) will be directing the Halo movie into theaters in 2008 forced us to track down some videos and see what all of the fuss was about.

After watching the above clip "Tetra Vaal," the choice suddenly makes a whole lot more sense. That's not all though. Gamevideos has stalked Blomkamp and dug up some video shorts, check Yellow and Alive in Joburg to see Blomkamp's style. While we might've been thinking "who is this guy?" after watching these three clips, it's getting a bit clearer.

if the movie turns out anything like Blomkamp's video shorts, it's gonna kick ass.

Yeah Blomkamp is able to compress coolness into shorts but if he can expand it then it'll be awesome. I think Peter Jackson is going to have a bigger hand in this cookie jar than is assumed.

Edit: I checked out even more of his short films and add to his wow factor. I'm thoroughly pleased with the decision.
Aw, dude that sucks! I hope they find a better director to finish it off and make a good ending... Not that he was bad.
so when's it coming out?
