If you have been on planet Earth at any point in the last 20 years, you will know all about Mario. Ever since Nintendo created that first Mario title every game with his name sells like hotcakes. Even the Mario games that some people find quite disappointing like Super Mario Sunshine. Well Mario's latest outing is Super Mario Galaxy, which is truly an amazing experience. So amazing that it's one of the highest rated games of all time!
In the first month of Super Mario Galaxy's release in the U.S, the game sold around 1.12 million copies. Which was a really good start but expected of such a highly anticipated game. In the month of December the game went on to sell 1.4 million copies, another great month for Galaxy. Now here comes the bad part, in the month of January sales started to slip. The Game only sold 172,000 copies. This resulted in Galaxy dropping from its excellent position at second place, all the way to sixth place for January.
So why the sudden drop in sales? Is it simply because it's no longer the holiday season? Well this is where analysts come in useful, or not so useful in this case. Jesse Divnich from the simExchange thinks that the lack of units being sold is down to the Low sales of Wii hardware. Because of short supply of the Wii people haven’t been buying them, this is resulting in people not buying Galaxy either. It seems odd to me but granted, the game has sold well over 2 million copies so sales would have to start going down eventually.

Hmm, very interesting. You'd think that everyone who had a Wii would buy this game, which should be a lot.
Ouch, not good for Galaxy. It's interesting that it managed to drop that many places. Hopefully the sales will go back up by next week.

Yea, seeing how Mario is such a well known character, but Mario titles seem to sell in the long run.
That's true. Most Mario games continue to sell well into the life cycle of the system.
I would think that if you have a Wii, you would buy it as soon as possible. You are not a true wii owner if you don't have this game.
??? several million people already bought the game, 3/4 months later and now the sales have dropped...big deal
i'm waiting for a sale price, no hurry to pick it up, it will be around for a long time
172,000 copies for a game that isn't even that old is pretty bad. Especially for a game like Galaxy.
Exactly. The point being made in the article is the fact that the sales have dropped all of a sudden. And not just by a little bit, the lower sale numbers are noticeable. And you wouldn't think that for a game like Galaxy.
172,000 aint too shabby...its already sold over 3 milion, seems like a sucess to me
maybe because everyone in Japan is busy with Brawl right now
Yeah, I don't see what the big deal is either. I mean, it's going to stop selling eventually, new games come, new things to get. Not a surprise honestly...
People = overreacting.
Its like if people were to panic when Halo 3 sold only 200,000 copies after a few months of release. These things happen, a game doesn't necessarily end up being TOP SELLER UNTIL TEH END if it is a really good game.
It'll climb back up in time.
Heck, I don't own it yet xD
