As the release date for Mario Kart Wii creeps closer and closer every day, the anticipation for the game appears to be sky high right now. Who wouldn't be excited about this crazy high-speed racer? With 12-player races, uploadable and downloadable ghosts, tournaments, and Mario Kart Wii even has it’s own channel for online play. Now another feature has arrived. It is confirmed that Mario Kart Wii will support text chat. This was announced on Nintendo's European website.

"You can create rooms for friends to join and even text chat while you're waiting for other racers."

Although the majority of fans wanted voice chat, we will be communicating through text. Even if we can't scream at each other until our throats are sore, this is a good step in the right direction for Nintendo.

I don't see the big deal for voice chat, although BWii co-op needs it, but otherwise I think it's an overrated feature and this text chatting thing isn't so interesting.
He said nothing about texting during racers, just when your waiting for them is what he said. <_<
Nintendo's online service has finally advanced all the way to 1999.
I really don't see where text chat is all that great. It's one thing to use a wireless headset and talk trash to the people your racing against, but I wonder if Nintendo doesn't want that because some little kid might hear a bad word? The same words he/she hears continuously while at school...
I'm not understanding this. They will allow text messages but not voice chat? Who's to say that someone want type bad words? Who's to say that someone want try to talk to children through this game? It just doesn't make sense that they would not allow voice chat for fear of younger ones hearing bad words but they'll allow them to see it. Yes, I know they can use filters but anyone who really wants to swear online can find ways around filters quite easily.
I'm guessing it will have a filter built into it so text won't be profain...
Text chat isn't fully supported. It's a bunch of preset messages that you can only say before the race starts...
Oh, I see. They shouldn't really call it text chatting then if I can't choose what I want to say. Sorry but that sounds lame. You'd get tired of hearing the same things over and over. Nintendo is so crazy about parental controls so why not just add a parental control. Make it so that if a game is a certain rank then some features can't be used if the parental control is on such as voice chat.
I wanna know who in Nintendo is supplying all of these ideas. Who wants to use freakin' predetermined messages? I hate this "protection" they provide.

I can see it now "I'm a Mario Woohoo". Doesn't Nintendo understand that it's 2008. Remember these kind of taunts in Mario Golf?

If you read closely, it says you can "create rooms for friends to join and text chat while you're waiting for others". I'm guessing you'll only be able to text chat with people you've added as friends. This leads me to believe that their probably won't be much of a filter.

I don't really care about the lack of voice chat at this point. I absolutely hated it on xbox live, so much so I turned it off while playing. I can see where it'd be good (if you only played with friends), but online chat with random people can and usually does ruin the experience.

Mario Golf on GC had customizable text taunts if you had the GBA game and link. I thought that was kind of neat.
I'd like the option though. Voice chat is not for everyone but some people love it. I've played online games on my PC since I don't know when and I never even tried voice chat until I payed LOTR Online. After that I wish every game had it. It's so much easier to play and talk then play and type. Granted this is chatting in a lobby though so typing would be no problem.
To bad it doesn't have voice. What is the point of even having text chat? It's so stupid.
Well we don't even have text chat now... Sad
