Last week, Sony showed off head tracking software for the PlayStation 3 using just the PS Eye camera (via MTV Multiplayer). That's right, no crazy hardware configurations devised by third parties (e.g. Johnny Lee, Electronic Arts), just software that identifies your head and its movement.

A representative said the head tracking software has not been announced for any titles, but we'd love to see it show up soon for pretty much any genre of game.

Just one more reason to pick up the PSeye
Yeah, I've been thinking about picking it up forever. I'll get it eventually but after buying the guitar I think the master would kill me.
Amazon is selling it for $34
We can't get packages from Amazon in Thailand. We're on the "naughty" list.
I thought the video is a little weak, because it didn't seem like the camera could track him very well, but then I thought about all the people who were probably walking behind him and the people to the side. When you think about it that way, then you realize it's probably nothing like what your living room will be like, unless you have hundreds passing through Wink
Yeah, it's the same with cameras that have it as well. If everyone is standing still it can normally get most if not all of them but if anyone moves or anything in the background is moving then it's bound to miss some.
This sounds awesome, but the video is broken for me.
Hmm, that's strange. It's working for me. I'm using Firefox 2 so try it in another browser or look or check your plug-ins?
my pc webcams being doing that for years.

Logitech FTW
Congrats to you! You also do know that the mouse has been around for quite a while and that it can control the arrow on the screen. Not only can it control the arrow, it does it exactly as I move it. I don't have to waggle my mouse to get it to double click either...
mice are great,

I need a better video showing off a little more detail. All the camera seemed to be picking up was the position of the head in relation to where it first started tracking, not the pitch or yaw. This reminds me of those $40-50 plug in play games that use reflective tape on a toy sword to track motion (they were actually pretty fun).

If they fine tune that technology, it could make a world of difference for gaming. Of course the first application I will point out is first person shooters. Use head tracking to look, something like the wii-mote (or Guncon)/nunchuk to walk/run and shoot. Good to see more companies advancing controls, as they have use in areas well beyond gaming.
