Things are certainly heating up on the Wii homebrew front, after seeing a Wii Tetris game, a long-awaited Linux build, a SNES emulator, and even a homebrew MP3 player, the newest application to successfully run on Wii is a
Sega Genesis emulator.
If people were to catch on to this it would potentially mean a drop in sales on Nintendo's
Virtual Console. Even though the games are not overly expensive the principle behind an emulator is to play games for free. This could still spell a significant financial downturn for the company.
Famous coder "Eke-Eke" has created this emulator using the same Twilight Princess Hack that has caused such storm in the underground developer world. This isn't just any run-of-the-mill piece of code though; this is in fact the first ever Sega Genesis emulator which can stably run
Virtua Racing, a milestone in graphical rendering back in its day. Considering that SNES and Genesis games are both available through the Virtual Console there's no doubt that Nintendo will be looking to put a stop to all this as soon as possible.

Nintendo will be looking to lock this out really quickly. Especially if they notice a significant drop in VC sales.
But maybe this won't effect sales. The average person is not going to do anything that they think might break their Wii. Something like this I just don't see applying greatly to the masses. Regardless, it will be locked out again and a great firmware battle will begin.
There are already discs for the Wii that have over 2,500 games from the systems in the VC but this will make it much easier for other people to get their hands on illegal roms and play them using this hack. VC sales may decline a bit but I doubt very much though. I just don't see people that would be willing enough to go and find the roms and then use the hack to play them on their Wii. A lot of trouble for something that just wouldn't be worth it. Unless you finally get to play Goldeneye on the Wii! :O
I always saw VC aimed at more casual gamers (not saying hardcore gamers don't use it either) and since casuals will have little to no interest in this in-depth stuff then. I doubt there'll be a massive drop in VC sales.
Having said that, I also think an update will block this out.
