It's not much of a shocker to learn the latest (and final) installment in the Metal Gear Solid series is a sizable one -- MGS games have a history of being big (and beautiful). However, a recent interview with series creator Hideo Kojima revealed a startling fact about MGS4 -- Kojima complained that a few features had to be cut from the game so it would fit on a Blu-ray disc. As format fanatics already know, that means the game takes up nearly 50 gigabytes of space.
If true, this is bad news for anyone who hoped to see anthropomorphic cow-bots on the 360 (unless that data was divided between about five dual-layer DVDs), but it could also mean a painfully long installation time for PS3 owners as well. We can only imagine that 49 of those gigabytes are taken up by thousands of variations on just three lines of dialogue -- "Snake? SNAKE? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!?"

A lot of people were commenting on joystiq that this might be due to uncompressed audio, but it still seems a bit of an overload if the game is actually that big and takes up that much room.
Whoa! They had to cut features to put in on a Blu-Ray disc? Kojima is really trying to pack everything into this game. Isn't this his last Metal Gear Solid game? Maybe that's why...
I understand wanting to go out with a bang, but a game taking up more then 50gb...sounds like over-kill

well if he wisely used all of those 50GB...
The cut stuff (I can guarantee) will be in the MGS4 special edition that Kojima always does (Twin Snakes, Substance, Subsistence) so it doesn't matter too much.
Hopefully it's not all audio/video.
Yeah, it sounds like there will be a lot of cinematics, which is great but don't go to overboard with them so that I'm mostly watching instead of playing.
You can skip cutscenes if you really want to.
But you should be warned, upon putting MGS4 into your PS3... you are essentially agreeing to play a movie. Remember that.
Those saying Kojima is overkilling it by wanting more than 50gig need to remember something.
Kojima > BluRay.
I think the game will feature a extremely realistic world and with amazing character AI and uncompressed sound throughout...that will fill up the Blu-ray disc.
It does suck that he's having to cut stuff though D:

It could be worse, it could be on 6 dvd's. I'm sure they'll be a special edition which will have a supplement disc for any extras he'd want to put on like interviews and such.
I'm fine with cutscenes as I enjoy them but just wondering why they couldn't fit it all onto a blu ray disc. I'm thinking it's gonna ship with a second disc just for other stuff like you two mentioned. At least that would make the most sense.
It's like buying your favorite movie and then looking at the deleted scenes and saying to yourself...I know exactly why these weren't put into the movie. I think the same will be said with MGS4. I realize it's the end of the franchise (or so they say), but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to throw everything including the kitchen sink onto a disc and into a game. I'm sure this game will offer hour after hour of amazing game play and story, so I'm not worried about anything that won't be on the game disc.

i never really thought of this, but a "MGS4: Sub*" would most likely happen. im willing to hold out on MGS4 (and the MGSO beta) for the next Sub* game.
so a fair percentage is uncompressed audio?
Why?!
There are plenty of lossless audio codecs out there! using uncompressed audio is like getting a new TV and just cutting a hole in the front of that ridiculously huge box instead of unpacking it.
Why cant he just make it in more than one disc like "Lost Odyssey" (Four Discs)? Instead of cutting out stuff?
I'm guessing there won't be any actual game stuff cut out, but we'll see some extras that will be given to a Special Edition version. Lost Odyssey on Blu Ray would have been 1 disc.
why dont they make it on 2 blu-ray discs?
Um. Halojames... that was a bit uncalled for. And by a bit uncalled for, I of course mean VERY uncalled for.
