I always metacritic something that I'm unsure about. It's not been wrong yet. I basically, avoid something if it's got a less than 70 on metacritic
thats true if there are lots of reviews not so much if only 4 or so

The site is really good about finding a lot of reviews, and since you can see the review score and how many actual reviews there are, then if you see only 4 for a particular game at least your not going into a score blind.
I think a thumbs up/down system is too simplistic. It leaves no middle ground for "average" games (e.g. games you could recommend to a fan of the genre), and it ignores the fact that some good games are better than others.
if that niche game got a 5 out of 10 (assuming 5 is average), how would the reader know with just the number alone that the game is for them? they have to read the review. what 1up is trying to do is force people to read the reviews and also not be part of metacritic or gamerankings compiled score. sites like that make what the author wrote become insignificant.
how do movie critics get away with a thumbs up/down rating? the movie genre is by far larger than that of video games.
But take for example, a game like, I dunno, Red Steel. Personally it's a game I neither like nor dislike, and for a number score I'd give it a 5. What am I supposed to do in a thumbs up/down system? Thumb sideways? A number, on the other hand, can more accurately reflect on the opinion of the reviewer, and that's the point of having a score: it's a summary, in numerical form, of the reviewer's overall opinion of the game.
I used to write reviews for Krazygamers.com, but at least there we made sure there were no .1 decimals. It was all in .5's - 8.0, 8.5, never an 8.6. The main problem I had with reviews on that site was having to assign so many arbitrary numbers to scoring. Graphics, Sound, Gameplay, Tilt, and Overall.
I'd prefer a single, defined 1-5 scale to grade a game. It's effectively the same as the letter grade scale (five letters, five numbers). Less is more.
As for Krazygamers, that website went under. The owner was both apathetic and lazy towards the management of the site, despite the potential and company links it had.

and it doesnt work for music...i dont know what it is but critically acclaimed music is usually crap...but its great for movies and even tv IMO
i like the grading system better. Even though I use the numeral system instead
