Microsoft has cut the price of its Xbox 360 video game console in Europe.

From 14th March, the 20 gigabyte hard drive model will cost 270 Euro, a drop in price of 80 Euro.

In the UK, the entry level machine, which does not come with any hard drive, will cost £159.99, £40 less than the current price.

The price drops mean that the versions of the console are now cheaper than both of its competitors - the Nintendo Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3).

Sony's 40GB console currently retails for £299.99 compared to £259.99 for Microsoft's top level machine - the Xbox 360 Elite, which has a 120GB drive.

The Nintendo Wii currently retails for £180 in the UK.

Microsoft said that the price of the entry level machine had been chosen because historically it was "the price point where a console's audience begins to expand".

The Xbox 360 has been losing ground to both of its competitors recently, despite having launched earlier.

Wow, for once in my life I feel the urge to buy a 360... But I want a PlayStation 3! Come on Sony, be kind to us...

This type of competition isn't bad at all. Microsoft's system has been around since 2005 so this move not only makes sense, but it's also very good for consumers. Hopefully this will give the Wii a run for it's money in Europe and Nintendo will rethink their whole game strategy.

Nice! So how much will the Premium 360 cost in the UK (in £'s)? This is great for me as it means I'll be able to afford a 360 even sooner.

Nah, this affects Wii gamers a lot. Nintendo were already losing customers to Microsoft, and now that backstabbing will surely increase...

Hmm... 360 for less than a Wii... or a PS3 that will get FF-XIII, MGS4 and KH3....

Well it seems that this move by Microsoft might actually push Sony into lowering the price of the PS3 again...sooner then they wanted to...

"Sony will be nervous that the PS3's recent sales surge may fizzle out now that the premium Xbox 360 undercuts the PS3 by GBP 40, and the cheapest Xbox model is almost half the price of the PS3," commented principle analyst David Mercer.

True what gft said, this may actually work out well for someone like me and an lm-x as Sony may lower the prices now on PlayStation.

Wooo! I just checked Play.com and the 360 has had it's price cut! The premium now only costs £189.99, and it previously costed £249.99. I'm so getting one; especially at that price
